Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

MP: 36.52 BB (VPIP: 12.50, PFR: 7.50, 3Bet Preflop: 5.88, hands: 40)
MP+1: 30.17 BB (VPIP: 42.50, PFR: 2.50, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 40)
MP+2: 70.6 BB (VPIP: 17.65, PFR: 5.88, 3Bet Preflop: 16.67, Hands: 17)
CO: 116.84 BB (VPIP: 25.00, PFR: 8.33, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 12)
BTN: 108.44 BB (VPIP: 53.85, PFR: 12.82, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 40)
SB: 39.2 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 4)
Hero (BB): 49.77 BB
UTG: 40 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 6)
UTG+1: 40 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 2)

9 players post ante of 0.1 BB, SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.4 BB) Hero has 7:diamond: A:club:

fold, fold, fold, fold, MP+2 calls 1 BB, fold, BTN calls 1 BB, SB calls 0.5 BB, Hero checks

Flop: (4.9 BB, 4 players) T:club: A:spade: 8:spade:
SB bets 2.45 BB, Hero calls 2.45 BB, MP+2 calls 2.45 BB, BTN calls 2.45 BB

Turn: (14.69 BB, 4 players) 8:club:
SB checks, Hero bets 9.79 BB, fold, BTN calls 9.79 BB, SB calls 9.79 BB

I wanted to bet hear to fold out any flush draws and with the SB's check I suspect he has a pocket pair of some sort, and decided not to barrel since he can see someone is probably holding the ace

River: (44.06 BB, 3 players) 7:heart:
SB bets 25.86 BB, Hero calls 25.86 BB, BTN calls 25.86 BB

I realize this is a mistake to call here, clearly he was nervous on the turn of the ace or the three of a kind 8s so when he donks the river here for all his chips, its a pretty clear sign of strength

BTN shows 9:club: 6:club: (Straight, Ten High)
(Pre 42%, Flop 18%, Turn 24%)
SB shows 5:heart: A:diamond: (Two Pair, Aces and Eights)
(Pre 25%, Flop 40%, Turn 38%)
Hero mucks 7:diamond: A:club: (Two Pair, Aces and Eights)
(Pre 33%, Flop 42%, Turn 38%)
BTN wins 121.65 BB

Check the turn for pot control. 8x is a possible hand given the limping, plenty of flush and straight draws and you have a relatively weak ace. If the betting spreads across three streets you are can get crippled here because of the SPR. Your goal here is to get to showdown so checking is best and then evaluate if there is a bet behind you or if you get to a river decision.

Don't raise pre, you are unlikely to get through and will be OOP in a bloated pot with plenty of difficult decisions and some reverse implied odds. Pre and flop is fine, turn is where it goes awry.

your right about bloating the pot for sure althought i will say i was reasonably confident there werent any stronger aces because they likely would have raised pre with A9s+/A10o+ and two 8s on the board makes it less likely that there's an 8 in one of these players' hands although its still a good possibility, they are just as or probably more likely to have weak aces, flush draws or medium pocket pairs.

but yeah i should have just been looking for a showdown, especially if i was confident my hand was the best.
