Hello, I am a newbie to playing online poker and I use an odds calculator. My friend who also plays online thinks that I am cheating by using one. I don’t consider it cheating. I know that there are tons of these calculators out there and my opinion is that they help newbies (like me) understand odds and help make decisions. Maybe there are some odds calculators out there that tell you what to play by seeing other players hands or something. But I downloaded one (and this is the only one I’ve tried so far) from PokerWingman and it merely provides calculated suggestions of when I should bet or fold and it is still up to me to evaluate the situation and decide whether to listen to it or not. I wanted to know if anyone else considers odds calculators as cheating? Or if anyone else uses them and finds them useful?

It`s not cheating. An odds calculator simply assists beginners by making the calculations which more experienced players do mentally.

Oh, and you shouldn`t post links like that. Read the "Rules & FAQ" at top of page.

I use PokerStove, as do many of our members, as do almost all the Pro's. I have seen this odds calculater refered to in no less than three popular poker books. It's not cheating, it's a learning or reference tool. I'll often keep it open while I'm playing, but not for real time decisions. I may check the odds on a recently completed hand if I have doubts about a particular call or fold, but mostly I use it as a means of checking my facts before responding to a hand analysis post. Not only is it NOT cheating when used in this way, but I strongly recommend that anyone serious about improving their game find strong odds calculator.

I use an odds calculator but a lot more to stop my stupidity some times (like it'll tell me when to fold if anyone raises if I have like JK and I want to call so bad) but most of the real tough decisions it doesn't help you with, that's all you.

And it definitely isn't cheating....

I use the calculator in my head. There's not really that much math to know and after a while it will stick.

Its not cheating, there are programs out there that keep stats on players you play against but more importantly keeps stats on your own hands and it will tell where you need to improve and so on. It will tell you how much you won on certain hands like AA and every other hand, it also gives you stats on certain positions and curcumstances. Prgrams like this are not cheating and some sites offer it as a sign up bonus instead of 100% match on deposit, they're pretty expensive but your serious about poker and play a few hours a day its a MUST and not cheating!
