I play .10NL (slow winner) and a little .25NL (slow loser) online (FR) at PS. What limit in live will be similar to these online?

I am headed to vegas for New Years, and while the trip is NOT for gambling, I would like to play a little live table poker while there. I have very little live experience and do not want to blow a ton of money. Where would I find the safest tables to play a few nights? I am not looking to make a ton of money, I just want to play a little live poker w/o blowing my play money.

Also, any suggestions for where to spend New Years?

Play the 1-2 limit holed'em. You can buy in for $50 or so, though I would buy if for at least $100

Yep I would say 1/2 limit. If your near the Rio they have a high hand jackpot there. Just remember its a bit different game than NL.

If NL is your thing try tournaments. They are running at all different times and are in Cardplayer magazine I believe. Cesar's had a nice one rebuy one add on one in the morning if I remember correctly but they have a ton to choose from at all different starting times and locations.

Why not try out the 3card poker tourneys as well, they usually have high jackpots for good hands and you play against the house!

why would you want to play against the house, I take pride in being a poker player and not a gambler...may as well play carribbean stud, which by the way has the worst odds of any casino table game you'll ever find.

but ya, you can go anywhere and find some lower limit poker, or even a lower buyin tourney (i'd suggest w/o rebuys). Usually around 100 people in the 50-100 buyins through the week

They have 1/2 No Limit at all the Poker Rooms many with $100 Max Buy-Ins

You can even throw in $50 Bucks and give it a shot.

These games are pretty loose and that is what I would recommend.

Even though I like Limit, the 1/2 just takes rake from you in Live and it is almost impossible to beat the rake in that game. Skip it

OMG i have not seen that much bad advice in one thread in a long time.

DO NOT play limit, it's a different game than NL and requires study to understand proper play.

Most poker rooms in vegas are 1-2 with $200 max buyins. Some casinos are $1-3 with $300 buyins. There are a few sites that tell you the limits of various rooms but if you find a 1-2 with 200 buyin that's fine.

Personally I've found tremendous success at Imperial Palace, Sahara, etc ... basically casinos that not many people go to for poker. ideally the poker room is next to a bar. People having fun and BLOWING lots of money. Excalibur was a disappointment and they got rid of their real poker tables and instead have PokerPro tables which I tried and HATED.

Most tournaments outside of Caesars have horrible structures so be sure to check those. Oh also Paris has a few cash games but the tables are great for fun. Remeber that NOBODY comes to vegas to fold, ever.

I don't really agree. Yes Limit has a different texture then NL, but if you you want to have fun without risking your entire stack on any given hand then sticking to limit is an alternative. You just have to understand that players chase thier draws in limit, usually to the river unless there is a lot of action. Of course tournments are a good alternative too.

I disagree w/ this analysis, at least for what the OP was asking.

I have played the 1/2 limit tables in Vegas and A.C. (and I am a NL student). You do not have to be a student of Limit Hold'em to at least breakeven at these tables, but I agree it is a different game. In my opinion the Limit players I have played live with are so bad that it doesn't matter whether or not you have Limit success.

Look up some articles and ask around here for the biggest differences in the game before you head out, so you can have some key tactical differences in the back of your head if you decide to sit at a Limit table.

If you're a winning player at 10NL you should be fine playing either Limit or NL. Limit will let you play longer, and if you only have $200 to play with the entire trip I would plan on sticking with these tables, only playing top hands, sneaking in with good odds, having fun and enjoying yourself, YOU'RE IN VEGAS!

You sit down at a NL table and your entire bankroll for poker during the trip could be gone in about 5 minutes. Truth is (at least in AC) the live NL 1/2 tables play much differently than online tables. Don't be suprised if standard preflop raises are anywhere from 10-25 dollars (and more than 2 players!), and you'll have some tough decisions post flop if you're worried about losing your money the whole time. At least playing Limit you know how much someone can raise to, how much you can possibly lose or win in a given hand.

Maybe play limit in the beginning and the last day you sit down at the tables hop on a NL table just to test them both? Let us know what you decide and what your experience is like so others can learn.

This is just my advice, but IceMonkey sums up everything you really need to know right here...

People have different perceptions based on their experiences, so expect that you may read some good ... and different advice.

Limit Poker: No Fold Em Hold Em in Las Vegas. This may be the most economical way of playing, but also the most frustrating. It is not uncommon for many pots to be family pots with some players limping with any two cards. Expect bad beats and crap hands hitting a lucky river. Fold at this minimum limit level in Las Vegas? Muhahahahaha. No. No one does.

No Limit: Sounds like you want a friendly room. You might want to try Ballys and the Imperial Palace. These rooms tend to attract tourists, some very bad and some very drunk. Luxor used to be a fun place, but I have not played there since they made major changes some time ago.

Other notes:
Bill's Gambling Hall: Only a few tables, but juicy, I hear.
O'Shea's: You are not allowed to play unless intoxicated. :D
Paris: Poker Room now closed.
Tropicana: Poker Room now closed.
Excalibur: This would have been the perfect room for you before they switched to electronic poker games. I tried them and didn't like them. If I want electronic poker I'll play online on my laptop.

Have a fun trip. :)

thanks for all the advise everyone. I would really like to stick to NL.

would playing at The Orleans be advisable? They seem to have a great poker room, but is that a bad thing for me? I will be staying there, so it would be very convenient, but again big poker rooms attract lots of better players if I understand it correctly.
