I think it would be a fun project trying to teach my nephew how to play poker. Im thinking best way to make it fun for him would be to play with lollies and maybe no betting. or maybe 5 card poker would be the best place start or maybe there is a trick to get them to learn. I think at the moment all he knows is that higher cards are better.:boxing:

First you should try to explain him the basics like what beats what. When he will get that you may try to play with him with open cards for start (you should explain why some move is right or wrong) and after that you may even try to play a real hand but on the end of every hand to check his cards to see if he played them right.

Anyway I think that 6 years is just too young to think and make decisions about poker :) Maybe wait another 2-3 years :p

Funnily enough, one of my piano students was struggling at maths and I suggested to her mum that they teach her to play poker. She's 8 btw. Anyway, at first I got the whole sceptical "but poker's gambling" thing, but after showing her my HEM2 reports and stuff and explaining pot odds, ev etc.... she's now acing maths. You could use smarties (m&m's?) as chips or something but the problem would be the half eaten stack I can imagine happening whilst you'r not looking

How I taught my nine year old poker

My daughter (9 yrs) kept on asking me about the game I was playing on the computer and asked me to teach her so my wife and I sat down and taught her what hands beat what. When we play poker on game night we play 3/6 limit holdem with 100 chip buy in so the game doesn't last too long but long enough. I'm glad I taught her how to play, it's fun for her to play and fun for my wife and I as well.

I am not in favor of teaching kids to play poker.
They will create habits of betting, and this is complicated.

I would start with yahtzee, because that teaches all the hand rankings. Then, go from there teaching how poker is similar.

i dont agree with teaching minors how to play poker. At least wait for him to become 10. i think 6 is too young. :p:p:p:p:p

If they are interested they will learn. Think when they ask, it would be time to introduce them to the game.

I don't agree with letting kids play poker either, or to even let them watch me play it online. Kids key off of others when it comes to adopting habits. There's a reason why drinking, porn, and gambling is for 18+

I think if you teach them right they will have good money management skills/bankroll management.

I think starting from basics and regular playing can make anyone very good at poker
It requires continuous effort

I learned at 10.... Not sure a six year old will fully comprehend. I'm all for teaching kids poker though :)

Yeah, my suggestion would be just don't.

Loads of other games you can play with kids. Wait until they're older for poker.
