This is a discussion on How to keep bad habits from affecting your game? within the online poker forums, in the General Poker section; I quit smoking and this was reflected in my game, the bitterness of which anger notes did not exist before, I will be glad to
I quit almost 5 years ago and it changed my sleepong habits as well as my poker game. However i got hooked on debbie cakes after that and gained weight that i still can't get off. Belly fat sucks lol but poker is good
Start smoking again (not a good idea) or replace poker with jogging, going to the gym, playing soccer with your friends etc. In about 6 months, after the cravings are gone, you can safely return to poker as a healthier man.
Since you've been smoking while playing poker, not only that cigarette cravings negatively affect your play, but just the act of playing poker brings up the cigarette cravings, in a vicious circle that you need to break in order to successfully quit.
I don't Smoke! And that's great! Poker has nothing to do with it! Smoking and Poker are two different things. Don't smoke and be happy! Play Poker healthy! It is much better to play with a clear head and a clear mind. Breathe a full breath. Live! That's great!
It's simply a barrier/ hump you need to negotiate. I gave up many years ago and found that within days, mentally, the boost I got being happy to quit soon outweighed the cravings. Then as each day passed the idea of even reverting back to smoking seemed sillier and sillier.
I am a smoker too I have many years with that habit I have tried on a couple of occasions and I have not been able to quit and that is why I start congratulating you and so that this does not influence your poker game use the tools that until now you are applying and investigate other that can help you, seek the advice of a specialist if you find it very difficult but do not give up in this attempt to leave this habit I could not and I hope you succeed and get rid of the cigarette. I think they recommended it to you but my advice would be to use nicotine flavored vaporizers that would make it easier for you to quit smoking and should help you not to disturb your game
My wife quit smoking a long time ago. For months she would "joke" about wanting to hit smokers with her car so she could take their cigarettes. Over time the anger did subside though. Now she can even be around smokers and not crave it. I can imagine how badly nicotine withdrawal would affect your game. I doubt the typical advice about dealing with tilt would apply to a medically induced issue like that. But your health is obviously more important than poker. So I would say stick to quitting, if you have to, take a couple weeks or months stick to freerolls or what would be tiny stakes for you until you start feeling the anger subside.
The bitterness you express is due to your nicotine withdrawal. That has nothing to do with poker at all..Try to practice some sport to reduce anxiety..It will take youa while to feel better but with effort and possitive mindset you´ll achieve it.Good luck!
It is difficult to answer this question because I can not even stop it. but I guess playing sports can help reduce stress and aggression. the most important thing is to define a strategy before the game and to try to adapt it to your opponents during the game while showing rigor and discipline.
It is very good for your health quiting smoking! The appearance of anger, is a result of the absence of the bad habit. I think it will disappear while you insist in healhty habits which will fill the void.
My hubby and I are having the same issue...we had quit for over 4 years after 20+ years of smoking but then a couple years ago when we went to Las Vegas we started again. Now we have been trying to quit for the last 2 months. It sure doesn't help that we both work from home everyday and don't have much of a life outside our house but everyday we wake up and say to day will be the day, lol!
I really like to drink alcoholic beverages, when I do it and I play poker I climb a lot my rank in poker I look like a Fish but I make good decisions and I win, it is a bad habit but it makes me win. I have also tried it in college and I have had difficult partials very drunk
Smokers know that a cigarette perfectly relieves stress. Perhaps players who quit Smoking will no longer be able to hide their emotions with cigarettes, and emotions are very influential in decision-making. There are two tips: 1) stop playing poker for a while until you completely lose the physical need for nicotine (about one month); 2) if you do not want to stop playing poker, try to take the same breaks during tournaments as during Smoking. Get out into the fresh air. From these walks you will get the same effect as from Smoking.
This post is very inspirational in terms of being able to kick the bad habit of smoking.
I enjoy smoking but know full well its not a habit that has many if any positives.
Congratulations for those that are trying or have succeeded quitting smoking.
I still smoke and after a badbeat I relax lol but there are so many bad habits that take away the concentration in the game depending on how comfortable you feel it could be listening to music while playing some like others not because they do not concentrate
I smoke during the break. Sometimes I play with beer. But when no way, why not go all the way past the bluff fails, you start to get nervous. Or Vice versa, first the card is rushing, you type a good stack, you play carefully and your AA, KK moves begin. You start spitting and swearing.
Not in a good way. I could finally get rid of the smoking habit thanks to trying to vape. Got tired of snus too, CBD gummies are much better, usually, I just buy it online, https://vapingdaily.com/ got pretty good deals. It's the best on days when I don't vape.
I quit smoking and this was reflected in my game, the bitterness of which anger notes did not exist before, I will be glad to any advice.
I had a similar issue when I first gave up smoking 6 years ago. Understanding the habit loop made it much easier for me to get through it. What I learned was that even when you cut out the bad habit, there is an unmet need which the trigger brings on, until we replace that unmet need with something (in my case 3 deep breaths or a glass or water) we will feel irritated.
This is the book that helped me understand habit loops, addiction, and recover quite well
re: Poker & How to keep bad habits from affecting your game?
the only thing what works for me when I want to break bad habit is to replace it with not so bad habit like quit smoking - start eating a lot. Dont really know which is worse eating even calms me down while Im playing
