CardsChat was on deck for last year’s WPT World Championship and saw first-hand how successful it was. The big story was the $10,400 main event attracting 2,960 entrants to smash its $15 million guarantee out of the park.

With the main event paying out almost $30 million, and additional $23 million won during the festival as a whole, the organizers are upping the ante this year. A new expanded schedule sees the WPT World Championship get underway earlier than before and include more tournaments, including three championship events.

Bigger and better WPT World Championship

The 2023 WPT World Championship will run from November 29 to December 23. The Wynn Las Vegas will, once again, host the season-ending finale, and WPT CEO Adam Pliska hopes the blossoming relationship will make the World Championship a festive tradition for poker players.

“The WPT World Championship festival was such an extraordinary milestone during our 20th season, thanks to our partner Wynn Las Vegas, and the enthusiastic support of the players. We hope we’ve started a tradition in poker that we can enhance and add to each season,” Pliska said in Tuesday’s press release.

Extending the festival means the organizers can bring back some old favorites and introduce some new ones. The final touches are still being applied to the 2023 WPT World Championship schedule, but we already know five of the events players can look forward to.

The 2022 WPT World Championship wasn’t just a commercial success. Each tournament surpassed expectations in terms of entries guarantees. Those achievements saw it named Event of the Year at the 2022 Global Poker Awards. However, beyond the buy-ins and payouts, the WPT World Championship was a throwback to the glory days of poker and an example of where the industry is heading.

It’s more than poker for WPT qualifiers

CardsChat spoke to a variety of players during the 2022 festival, many of whom had won their seats in the main event through satellites. Their experiences embodied the essence of poker. Naturally, they were excited about playing for millions of dollars, but it was about more than that.

Qualifiers were treated like VIPs and given access to all manner of perks. Not only that, they could rub shoulders with their poker heroes. This gave the WPT World Championship a heart and soul.

It went from being just another poker series to an event that players such as David Jorgensen described as “life-changing.” That’s the secret ingredient and the reason we can expect another festive cracker when the 2023 WPT World Championship gets underway in November.
