The reason table talk is so prevalent is simply due to ego.

Talking is the easiest way to placate our egos.

Poker is kinda like love, everyone feels that they are an expert in the field...

One of the hardest things to do in poker is to acknowledge our egos and then to check our egos at the door.

Its amazing how much money and tournaments are lost based on ego.

One of the biggest edges you can have in poker is learning how to control and even eliminate your ego...

Some really excellent points brought up here, seems like so many in poker just looking to pump up their ego rather than their bankroll.

It is also possible they are emotional basketcases, and can not stand to lose a pot (when they think their good hand should hold up). They need to berate the fish who sucked out to blow off some steam.

I especially like it when the lippy moron limps in with aces, loses to a crappy two-pair that would never have been in the hand if the pot was raised, and then calls the guy names.

Priceless.

I know how disadvantageous it is t the table . Ive seen it first hand and experienced it .

I have this habit of talkin to people at tables and have fun . but i try to be good to them and tell them what cards i have , next step im taking etc .
Once only my so called friend from canada ( in that moment ) & I were playin rest all folded .
I got pocket aces & he got K 8 then a A K 8 turned .
We both discussed , He said he want to go for an All in , 2 pair .
I told him i got 3 of a Kind Aces . And i told him to just fold .
And he did . At that tie im 5th & he is 11 th over all . We are the table leaders then .
If i did not actully chat , i dont have to be kind hearted to him . I a bit emotional .
And i finally completed the tournament in 11th position in some other table . He continued playin , i did not follow and we also never spoke .
But talkin and tryin to be friend in that moment , costed me something . I donno if its worth it . but what ever .
I completely disabled chat now :)

table talk

table talk uses:
-TILT YOU TOO MOTHERLOVER!!!!!! j/k
-gain information
-give misleading information
-talk your opponent in or out a call/fold
-remind yourself your not playing wif a bunch of drones? hey u might be
-as many lines of communication possible are needed in the poker world
-i get bored at the computer, that little chat bar can be a blessing
- wut if theres a hot chick......:D
- sometimes a few words a better then none

table talk ABUSES:
-just cause yor driving does not meen you can cut meeofff!I! pokerRAGE
-being a smart ass wif no merrits
-scrolling
-no respect i tell ya!!
-distraction
-threatening comments

reasons for abuse:
-plain stupidity
-ignorance
-lashing back at harsh critisizm
-bad poker play
-purposely bad poker
-sitting at a computer all day
-disagreement of how to play a hand or whatever......duh its poker
-i dont like their sports team
-detachment from reality
-sense of power or superiority over another
-a computer screen can't hit you
- its funer then balloon sword fighting

u get the idea........with a 4% margin of error and u losing your money all day or just getting beat up, the laziest thing to do is totally denounce the other player. Any reason will do, valid or not.:stupid
genereally table talk, if abused will take away from your focus on the game and that's typically why most people don't like it.t is so easy to do with so many frustrating reasons. foecurse is key on the internet!!!
live is a little different. i guess it all depends on what your talking about.. .. watch tony g online....lol that guy is funny.

I am quiet and polite until I end up early in a tournament with one or more stallers at my table. At which point, I'm a loudmouth who talks about poker tools and poker sites. I need to mention some free coaching videos, too. I don't know if the stallers are multitabling, watching porn, colluding with people at other tables or all of the above, but if I can think of a way to tilt them, I will.

I don't mind normal conversations with people I enjoy playing with. I agree 100% though on not talking strategy at the table or talking shit to bad players.

Even though you really want to sometimes when you get railed by a 2 outer. You just have to realize that you just got the call you wanted and that you want to continue getting calls just like it (with different results in the long run of course).

Yes, they tilt me. It's fine though, because before I busted out the other night I tilted half the table and they busted first.

If I gotta tilt, I'm going to do my best not to do it alone.

I run into these kinds all the time. They have a syndrome called "when I win I am a genius, when I lose I am still a genius, only you are a moron, that is why I lost!"

Nope, sorry zippy; who's the moron? Look in the mirror....LOOK!

This is similar to the Phil Helmuth syndrome called "I only lost because you did not play your cards like I would have played the same two cards so I can now berate you because of that" which is just as stupid.

Make sure you note them. They are clearly weak players and next time you can felt them even quicker/easier when they make stupid calls!

I am guilty of [frequently] calling people donk-a-morons. I do it to prevent from tilting. If I internalize the anger, I am much more likely to tilt than if I let it out. Additionally, people often think that people complaining like I do ARE tilting --- which often helps me at the table.

Two other things I'd like to mention: 1. To those of you that think teaching the fish is bad, I would say the following: they aren't listening. Most fish are so poker-challenged that no amount of explanation/teaching will get them to improve their play. If you all want to transfer your ability to assimilate information onto the fish, that's your prerogative --- but most of them can't/won't assimilate any information you give them.

And 2. The final statement of Michael's previous post is utter hogwash. "They are clearly weak players and next time you can felt them even quicker/easier when they make stupid calls". Just because people are complaining about your (or someone at the table's) play, it doesn't mean that they are weak players. Thinking that they are has a good chance of getting you into trouble.

Best of luck to all of you at the tables.

That limping with aces crap is sweeping the nation. And yes I love to see them get PUNISHED for that. Most of them can never get away post flop.

It is often some of the more inexperienced players that berate opponents in these spots. They still think good hands should always win, because they just have not played enough to figure out what a cruel ***** poker really is.

Hogwash? Not so fast - very often, depending on what they say, they prove themselves to be a weak player!

For example, if a guy is on the button and shoves 15BB's with AK into a BB stack sitting on 105BB who calls with A-J suited, then wins over the buttons AK with the weaker hand and the button guy calls him a stupid donkey, well! Clearly the guy does not understand the game, right?

So, if you call a guy names after he makes a standard play...well, you sound like you do not know the game. Thus, "Fish" comes to mind. After all, tells are tells; both what you see and what you hear at the table.

No hogs in that wash, lol.

I know what you mean about the above point. People are so hung up on the fact they had you dominated preflop, that you are a donk for making a totally standard call.

This is an excellent example. Well played sir.

Sorry, Michael, but you're not convincing me --- about your point, or not to table talk. If you don't like it, well, honestly, I don't care one iota.
Just don't come play me heads up. If you do, you won't like the chatter. Or the results.

Good luck.

i agree that chatting away can cause you to lose concentration and maybe play less effectively, but it DEF gives SOME kind of information. This of course can be double secret effective if you use it to the disadvantage of others at a later point in the trny. I find in Live trny play, I just cant sit quiet for 6-12 hours at a time. I am still human, and playing a game with dozens of different people it is hard for me to keep quiet that long. Talking to players gives me a little bit of an idea of why they may play, how much experience they may have, and other valuable information. Of course you need to be careful what information you may be leaking...unless it is false information laid as a trap for later perhaps? Sun Tzu's Art of War styleee

I like this thread. I really hate it when players just go off the handle in the chat screen. It's like really man? I get your mad but still it'll be ok... I love it when I get labeled as a donk, it makes my table image go down and people play a whole lot loser against me.
