I have over the years tried to be profitable in Poker, but I believe that I have been commenting on flaws, whether in the game in general or in my strategy, I would like to know how we can be profitable when seems that nothing is going as planned:confused::confused:

Hi all , I haven't read all this thread yet, so apologies if any repetition,
What have you tried to get better?
I feel a general idea is to play against strong players, have you tried this?
I feel I'm quite strong, and i taught a few friends and played others that played for years, i beat them initially, but as we played week in week out (live games) they got better and better, to the point where there were tough battles now, so maybe find a coach ? Or some people to play against?
I know some "guard " their "secrets" well and don't want to help out as it were , but some do and they don't always have to help you, just play against you, the main difference i felt my learner friends improved when playing me was to "play back at me" , the 3bet, the check raise, the lookup call, just in general not letting me have it my own way, hope this helps anyway it can. I'm always up for games, so if you find enough people I'll play too,
(Just a side note , what types of poker have you played? Even heads up nl os slightly different imo)

As for which "format" of poker makes the step to bigger money possible? Well I'd like to know that "secret" too, my gut instinct tells me it's not cash games (but hey i could be too weak to crush them ) so as some have aluded to maybe people won't share the "secret" or maybe there just isn't one "thing" that'll jump start a large bankroll, i heard some players on tv say vaguely that they jump stated $50 br into 1000s' from sng, but hey who knows , I haven't played may sng as yet, so plenty to try still, I'll circle back to cash games and say that perhaps once a large enough br exists; then you can dabble and make plays to consistently win and increase br, but I'm yet to see any proof of that, as some players lose large br over say a bad weekend and have to start over (this however isn't cash games fault but br management fault) as other players here have said,
Also some tv players are known to be "heads up specialists " however not knowing whether or not this is that successful, most tv players that have made big $ seem to be from "tournament winnings " so yeah maybe find ways to get more regular tournaments and start getting consistent results there .....

Hey wilpinsi.i would advice you to make a certain plan of how you are facing poker.Ιn my opinion there are some steps you should follow:1)Choose to be specialized in one format of the game..What do you prefer/enjoy to play mostly?Cash games,Sngs or MTTs?in which of them you think you are better at or you have better potential?Choose one of them and focus all you mental power..
2)Start to study this format even from beginning!!All we think that we are in good level but sometimes we miss even some crusial concepts..For example be sure that you are good knower of basic maths of Poker and then continue to more advanced concepts..Study,Study Study! You should build your knowledge step by step...Feel free to ask questions in forums, post hands of your previous played hands and discuss them, explore and solve your leaks and misunderstandings..Watch coaching videos for your stakes and format you play and see how other profitable players play..There are tones of good videos on internet,i am sure many of them are very educational.
3)Bankroll management:You can understand by your own how important is this so i will not analyse it more..:)
4)Mental Preparation:poker is a game who needs very very strong stomache..Variance is a b**ch and can kill a healthy bankroll easily, even if we play great..So be calm, avoid tilting situations which can destroy days/months of your good playing and give your 100% of your poker skill no matter of short term result..
Good luck :)

Exactly. Very well put.
But if all of that fails....
you might have better luck at slots :p

Sometimes advice are plain ABC poker which everyone knows and gives you examples where the hand plays in self. The basics

Some advice are more advanced but people are too scared to do it or don't get it. For example I have been experimenting with not so good hands every now and then , some people would call junk and it works really well for me. And the advice has been on upswing poker all along which I didn't understand before but now I do.

The important things with all advice is don't go overboard with it mix it up

Dont get MAD when you are mad then then you become unable to make right move most of the time, if you are losing so much, take a moment drink one glass of water, play some music and remember that TOMORROW will come so quicker then you think and you will be play AGAIN. Knowing when to STOP when losing, believe in yourself and be patient. Read ,study, watch videos and take notes and in the most cases know when to pull the trigger because you cant shoot when is to much wind, you will miss.

Try to objectively review your games and analyze each of the mistakes you think you have made and try to correct them, use other strategies

Bankroll management is going to be key for a tournament player looking to be profitable. When this is not your main source of income but a hobby you wish to make money or break even on you need to realize that taking it slow and getting into tournaments you can afford is the way to go. The turtle always beats the rabbit in the long run...

My advice would be to study and play poker much as possible. I try to play every single day. I watch instructional videos and hand reviews on Youtube also. I'm so passionate about the game, that wanting to get better/studying is fun for me. I wish you the best, and take care :beerglass

I 100% agree that. Just keep playing and studying (80% playing, 20% studying) as much as possible with proper bankroll (at least 100 buy-ins for the tournament player, at least 30 buy-ins as cash game player) and you will do it.
I will also recommend if you want to play cash games, use some small poker site for that, and for tournaments pokerstars is fine. If you are looking for long-term income, tournaments will be a better option. Also, researchers have said the best way to learn anything is to teach it. So, open your own poker blog and teach that you already know about poker.

Does this post make any sense?

Tournaments are tough. They are high varience, so proper bankroll management is key. Don't play above your means. Be patient and get lucky. Simple enough right?
Easy :D .....

Again i'm a firm believer of BRM, and hopefully the next deposit i make, I will adopt my own belief :D

I have found some few good points in posts in this thread.

I like how most of you say that bankroll management is the most important one, and I cannot agree more.

This game is sometimes hard to understand...you are doing everything the right way, and you are stilk not winning player. Same thing happens to me right now, but hey, I'm grinding, learning, and will come on top of my game, one day.

Well said man !!! I'm still kinda new to Cardschat, and it's information like this that makes me love this site. Well said Poker_Bro !!! Bankroll management is so important. For many years, especially when I was starting out I was playing with such a small bankroll. It sucks !!! Lol. It seemed like every dollar I put towards playing poker was money that should have been for something else like bills. When you are playing, and it's stressful because you know if you lose it you are gonna be in a bind. It's no fun at all ... Anddd you can't reload if you take a bad beat or find a better game. Bankroll management really is one of the most important things to consider to become a good poker player imo. Take care

This is similar to the process of converting water into wine. There is no fixed salary, you can not simply successfully pass the interview and get to work on Monday. You will need a huge amount of operating time (a foundation), to at least try to turn this hobby into a source of income

Study the game ! Read about and learn what the top players are doing to maintain a edge. Find someone maybe a coach to review your mistakes and show you how to play hands correctly based on the situation.

you should play many tournaments at the same time to stop the luck that make you lose some tournaments
