Well, you did play it fine, at least in my opinion. The only thing that might've made a difference would've been a bet on the flop. But with 3 overcards to your small pp on the flop, I understand why you thought checking and getting the free card was a good move: usually, any hand that has connected reasonably will call a probe bet on this flop. So, an argument can be made to bet it, but since it's a freeroll, lots of holding will call our bet since we are in position.

When you hit your trips on the turn, it's pretty normal to go for it as you think you have the best hand (and it is well disguised).

The other guy is in the SB, completes and then checks his flopped straight draw (normal play as he could have ATC and be in check/fold mode already). The cards played for him (the 4 hitting both of you), nothing to be ashamed of.

In mid to late position first in you should raise almost never limp. It's ok if there are several other limpers in already, but here you want to try to buy the button and keep the blinds from playing any crap cards with you having no idea what they have.

Feeler bet on the flop about half the pot or so to see if you are behind or not. Bet the set when you hit it, although at this point if villian isn't floding so you are going to lose all your chips anyway most likely.

The mistake is not betting preflop. If you are in mid to late position and you are going to play a hand it's almost always correct to raise. You don't mind taking the blinds with 44.

You say at the end you didn't put him on the hand he had. Wel how could you or anyone for that matter. He was in the blind and could have any 2 cards. With no information it would be impossible to tell what he had.
