I really see no problem calling a min raise to see the flop, but when you hit a flop out of position like this you bet it, you don't check it unless you plan to check raise.

Aggression, use your chips as tools, you have to bet to know where you are.

2 spades on the flop you absolutely have to bet and re-raise to find out for sure.

Checking on the turn is not an option either, did he hit his flush? How do you know unless you re-raise or get re-raised? Bet, bet, bet, poker is a game of betting and aggression.

The turn is another spade, 4 spades and you hold none, the hand shouldn't have gotten this far. If you were aggressive and he was still calling you at this point then you can check and fold.

The old addage "Better to win a small pot than lose a big one" comes to mind.

A bet is like a mouse click, what kind of information did you get from that click? If you just sit back and call or check you can get pop-ups and virus's and stuff. Bet's are tells use them.
