You might have raised 3x pf instead of the raise you made,
And of course you missed an opportunity on the turn when you still had top pair but the Ace scared you. You might have probed for info.

Looks like you were not quite aggressive enough here to increase your profit.

Had you bet the river, and villain folded, same results, but had he called you, and that is a real possibility, you benefit.

The turn ace is the scare card, but it would also be scary for villain. A 1/3 pot bet here looks either like a probe or a value bet. If villain sees it as a probe, he might come back over the top and put you in a world of hurt decision wise. If he sees it as a value bet he folds it.

There's two possible things you could've done and in my opinion they can both be correct:
1. Do what you did, check/call down to the river once you see that ace.
2. Bet on that ace. If he has it, he'll usually give you some sign that he does based on his prior patterns.

If you followed method #2, you can usually act from that information. But as dj11 said, if he's a really good opponent he could feed you false information and put you in a real fix.

If you put him as a tight player, I'd say it made sense that he might have that ace. Q8 is a very unlikely holding considering your holding.
