Is anything standard in poker????

In this case, you can certainly make a reasonable case for folding.......or not. As with most situations in poker, it is errrrrrrrr.... situational. How has the table been playing? If you raise, would you expect most of the other players to fold? There are slos three players sitting out, have they been out for some time and not likely to join the hand? If you limp in, is it likely you'll see the flop?
Personally, I'd like to see the flop.....but then who doesn't!

That's why I provided a specific situation.

How has the table been playing?

Well it's just the 3rd hand of the tournament at this point.

If you raise, would you expect most of the other players to fold? There are slos three players sitting out, have they been out for some time and not likely to join the hand?

Obviously if they are sitting out they are not going to be in the hand, but you can't tell who's sitting out until later.

If you limp in, is it likely you'll see the flop?

It's pretty likely to see a raise.

Personally, I'd like to see the flop.....but then who doesn't!

uh yeah

You have a nice stack and the blinds are sitting out. I'd make my standard opening bet here, call a reasonable 3-bet if it happens and if not 3-bet, c-bet on most flops as you will be 1st to act. If I call a 3-bet then I only c-bet on trips, 4-flush or OESD.

newcomer but early freeroll nobody wants to play properly. 99 wins a good %of hands but don't slow play , slightly aggressive take the blinds at that stage. thats is enough. that's how i go depends on the table. maybe small bet you'll only get re-raise or all in,for me thats fold but i'm just learnin

Look at it this way, would you fold 99 on a 6 handed table?
You're looking to raise it here as you would on a 6-handed table.

I'd raise this 3-4 BB UTG if I were you. No position on others but as it is the beginning of a freeroll, you're likely to incur a couple of folds and force most people off the hands. C-bet the flop depending on what comes of it.

99 is a solid starting hand people. Definetely raise 2.5X-4X and call a 3-bet. It's early u have chips to rebound with and if you flop a set and he flops top pair ur getting it all.

You have enough chps to raise and see the flop, if you are re-raised then you have a decision to make but pockets 9's are good enough to play.
Remember a lot of people will see an UTG raise as a sign of strength (and in your case it is.

I think you never fold pocket 99's UTG.
If you have so many BB left post 3 times big blind and try to make you set or someting.
If you are short. 99's is a good hand to go allin with and try to dubble up or take the blinds.
