HJ was pretty tight over a very small sample (VPIP 18 over 17 hands). But I didn't think it was correct to call off about half my stack with 44 at this later stage (level 35) of the tourney. He showed down 77 earlier and I am not beating much with 44.

Was that the right decision?

NL Holdem $0.75+$0.03 (12000.00BB)
HJ ($145230)
CO ($530337)
HERO ($294653)
SB ($118104)
BB ($105153)
UTG ($175563)
MP ($59974)

Dealt to Hero: 4 4

UTG Folds, MP Folds, HJ Raises To $145230 (allin), CO Folds, HERO Folds, SB Folds, BB Folds

HJ wins: $40920

Yeah fold your not massively short stacked and when you are you want to be getting your money in first ideally not calling someone's shove

Yeah, I think it's fold, especially because you have 2 players behind. If you were BB and HJ was aggressive it would be a call.

For more than 10 BBs, I like folding 44 there.

Easy fold against a 12BB open jam and even more so with the chip distribution at the table. If you call and lose, now you are of the short stacks, and the next all-in will put you at risk. Whereas if you call and win, it does not even really change your situation, since you are already the second largest stack by a wide margin. Lots of downside in calling here and very little upside, so I would need a pretty darn strong hand to justify it. Probably something like 99+ or AQ+.

Easy call against a 12bb open jam. You then make trips on the flop and badabi badabum, pocket 4's eliminate the pocket jacks. Not a big mistake but you live and you learn :)

If someone already said this I apologize for repeating it but another reason to fold it what are we ever crushing here with 44? Unless villain is doing this with 33,22,A2, K2 etc we slightly ahead at best or crushed at worst. Factor that in alone and this is a snap fold. I only call all ins with low pocket pairs when the initial raiser is below 6 BBs or so and I am closing the action. That might be a little tight but even when the initial raiser has two suited overcards we can actually be behind. For instance we are behind J9 suited, 107 suited and hands that have flush and straight potential. Too much of our stack to risk when we are not even sure we are getting good against a lot of random hands and of course bigger pocket pairs are always a possibility.

Even if someone said it, I don't mind hearing it again from you! Thanks for replying.
