As the hand starts, the deepest stack is only 27 BBs, so there isn't much room to get fancy post flop.

The flop is draw heavy, and as you said, the next card could either kill your action, or kill your hand.

Your raise wasn't even a full sized pot raise, so it's unlikely villain had much and was probably just taking a stab.

It always sucks having a big hand and not getting paid, but that is one of the many ways of not running well.
