I'm really happy the Texans extended DeMeco Ryans' contract today. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the best young LB's in the NFL. He is well-respected throughout the league, but would get more recognition if he played for a playoff team.
The Texans let Dunta Robinson walk during free agency, but elected to lock up Ryans. DeMeco was a restricted free agent and the Texans could have simply tendered him a one-year deal and kept him. From a business standpoint, that may have been a wise thing to do, because it looks like the owners will lock out their players in 2011. But this signing shows the Texans' commitment to Ryans and will be well-received by their players.
I expect the Texans to make the playoffs this season. Then Ryans and some of the team's other good players will get more recognition.
