I went back playing online for about 2-3 months after years of absence. And when looking into twitters or twitch accounts I see a growth on them using and promoting other poker rooms that were sometime back quite small or minimum. Is this a new thing? What makes those other rooms better?

To me the best rooms are still the largest rooms, with many players.

The problem is that pokerstars was already much better, in terms of the benefits for the players, before it was much better.
It is still the room with the most games and players, but it also has the most difficult field, due to the number of regs present in the room.

Not really sure if there ever was a "hegemony". But I do recommend trying out at least a few different sites to see, which one(s) suit you best. Its also good for players, that there is some competition, just like in any other market :)

I think it's losing its hegemony, but in my opinion is related to one room specifically, GG Poker. I really don't play much there, but for what I read, they are having an amazing traffic of players, sometimes even bigger than PS, which was something unthinkable to happen after the black friday in 2011.

They did everything to lose their leadership! Some chests instead of the normal rakeback and a lot of other innovations removed the interest of players to them!

Hello.
Obviously, PokerStars is no longer the market leader. In fact, I think there are now 5-7 poker rooms that are the most competitive. Each of them has its advantages, and without a doubt, it only benefits us all. I think the online gaming market will grow very rapidly over the next decade.
Good luck.

Personally for me, PS never had it. Can't recall the time I loved this room more than others. PS never was #1 for me. Maybe 'cause I start playing in about 2016. I dunno, maybe PS was better than now some time.

Pokerstars is in great downswing and it is going to be big fall...but that is their strategy

PS was definitely the biggest for some time. I don't know if that's the case now but they still run the biggest games regularly. It's never been my favourite place to play but the software experience is a lot better than the competitors, or at least it was until they started adding silly gimmicks. I think I prefer the design of ACR now though I'm not too keen on how it seems to generate action. Most other sites are too slow for me. I tried party poker for cash tables but it's far too slow.

I still think PokerStars is the market leader. Ok, other poker rooms nowadays also promote themselves a lot via twitch streamers, this doesnt mean they are equal or better.
GGpoker is a kindof a "threat" to PokerStars, but has for instance not so many tourneys or even 9-handed cash games. I can play for instance during the day a lot of regular 2.20 and 3.30 MTTs on PokerStars, but GGPoker only has 1 or 2 regular speed tourneys.

I think pokerstars despite its mistakes is still the best, GG has the conditions to be able to put that privileged position at risk, although it needs a little more time to specify everything that it suggests regarding the traffic of low-level players that's where the difference with stars is most visible

GGpoker can be compared with pokerstars only in software and the number of players. In all other respects pokerstars is three heads higher, for example, take a variety of tournaments, pokerstars have tournaments for every taste, GGpoker does not have this.People have played at pokerstars and will continue to play, nothing will change

This is a good question, mostly because as the questioner said, I only recently played again. When I was playing a few years ago the only recommended site was always pokerstars. But today I see a lot of sites. I can't say for sure because I'm a fan of Pokerstars and at the moment I only play there. But I consider that if it lost its hegemony. That a few years ago I had.

before Amaya bought stars some years ago, it was imo head and shoulders above the rest.

It is still good now...but it has lost its edge. The large field mtts are still good value, but they are a minefield of variance.

I prefer a smaller room for my main action... one that takes bitcoin, and keeps the roll in bitcoin, rather than convert it to cash. SwC poker.

I still think that pokerstars is the leader, but it is falling and mainly the ggpoker is weakly expanding, so soon it will no longer be the leader.

GGpoker has not a bad chance of competing with pokerStars! At the time of the beginning of quarantine with covid 19, the traffic of GGpoker was almost equal to the traffic from the PS)

I sometimes play in other rooms. But in my opinion PS and GG are the best.
