There were two compromised tournaments, 30 minutes spent trying to find out what happened, closing and opening the App, restarting the smartphone, only to discover that it needed to be updated.

write to them in support. they will check, and if it turns out that you actually received a loss due to problems with the application, they will compensate for it. This happens

Only got a new challenge announcement. When PS does maintenance updates they announce before hand & adjusts tourneys such that they end before the server goes down.

Have you also checked on your internet service?

I already had some difficulties with PokerStars and had to restart the application several times!

I went to check everything works just an update has been released and now there are stairs, they have reappeared and the promotion works, but the poker site itself is working fine and everything is as expected. I think your site did not work and you were kicked out from the application itself because the update was released soon your money should be returned to the tournament

poker sites dont compensate players for connection problems, since the money lost by a disconnected players goes towards other players and not the site. Its also never possible to really say for sure, if the fault lies with the site or the user, so in my opinion this is fair enough. If nobody can play AKA "server crash", then tournaments are paused or cancelled, and in the case of cancellations players are compensated according to the sites cancellation policy.

Any tips on what to do?

Play on sites, that are as stable as possible, and make sure you have a strong internet connection and a gadget, that runs the poker client in a stable way. I play PokerStars on a laptop and experience very few disconnection problems. And when they happen, they are usually caused by my internet connection and quickly resolved. Like maybe I miss 1-4 hands on each table, and then I am back in the action.
