This would depend upon what you're looking for in a site.
The largest and most reputable sites are:

888Poker
I reside in
canada and am not too familiar with regulations when playing from the U.K. (I think either your deposits or withdrawls get taxed there? I'm not sure how it works &/or if it's the same for each site). I play on all of these sites & a couple other smaller ones too. I only play poker.
You'll find the largest number of players today at
GGPoker with
Pokerstars a fairly close 2nd. (until fairly recent, Stars had always been #1).
Some sites have a bit softer play when playing at the lowest micro buyin limits (ie. 888Poker is probably one of if not thee softest). Some have more players with much larger fields in Tournaments.
I think that
888Poker is a really good choice for getting started out playing
poker online... probably your best option of the bunch.
I played poker with friends for years too and then played a bit on a site called Pogo and from there it was Pokerstars & Fulltilt, followed by a few dozen other sites. My only regret is that I didn't start sooner and didn't play a higher volume of games back then.
