Might not be the biggest news in the history of online poker, but today 888 Poker has launched a new tournament series, which they call "the classic". There seem to be a 5$, 10$, 25$, 100$ and a 50$ PKO. They all replace some of the existing tournaments, and the goal of 888 Poker is to cater to those players, who are tired of long late registration periods and endless rebuys.

So there is no rebuy or reenter, and late registration only runs for 70 minutes. Blind intervals are 10 minutes, and players start with a 125BB stack. I am playing the 25$ right now, and to be honest it does not feel much different from the 22$ "starfish", which it replaced. Its still the same old regulars, but on the positive side the rake is a bit lower with 23+2$ buyin rather than 20+2$ in the old tournament :)

Oh my goodness, the description is making me LOL.

Why yes, 888. How did you know we didn't like unlimited re-entries and 3+ hours of late reg. :D

This is really promosing and I hope it catches on across all sites. Apart from the obvious, there is no reason that sites can offer these type of formats in parallel to the long late reg/rebuy formats.

Will have to dust off my 888 login :)

Personally I dont mind "second chance" rebuy, but I agree, that endless late registration and the associated late rebuys can be pretty annoying. Cutting it off, when a starting stack is 30BB, seem like a reasonable compromise to me. I also slightly prefer the 8-max format over 9-max. So all in all I think, this is a really good tournament structure, which I would certainly not mind to see 888 Poker expand further or other sites copy :)

I love em! 888 rocks!

However.. The Classic is 9max, what is this 8-max doing here? 8-max is new, classic is 9max. I want 9max. I want 9max now.

I like this idea and if they extended it to $1 and $2 games I might actually play some of them.
My all time favorite game was the Full Tilt daily $1 which was very similar to these games, except you started with a very deep 10k in chips with starting blinds of 10/20.

Obviously the name is just marketing, but who cares, as long as the structure is good :)

RIP full-tilt. Awesome times of 2013-2016. Yummy!

The closest thing is a 3,3$, which runs at 6.45 am CET. It has 80 min of late registration but with the option of "second chance rebuy".

Seems like this has been replaced already.

Was looking for the Classic PKO today and couldn't find it. I usually try to satellite in.

In its place is the 'Mini-Grand Slam PKO' which has identical satellites, and an identical schedule, but 140 minutes late reg/multiple rebuys.

It's a massive shame really :(

The "Classic" series never got popular, and as a result they were taken down one after one with the 50$ PKO the last one to get axed. So apparently all those people, who complain in forums about long late registration, dont actually put their money, where their mouth is.

:) I did wonder as the field sizes were quite small.

I regularly tried to qualify for the $50 PKO via the $1 sub-satellite (9 places) then $5.50 satellite (5 places)

Got to the final table once for $145 after deliberately trying to bust out of the satellite for a $25 consolation prize...I went all in with 10 5 off :D

The 60 minute late reg added a great dynamic to the tournament.

Didn't know they'd be axed so soon :(

I also liked the format, and especially that it went into shoot-out mode, when a starting stack was 30BB. I wish all MTTs had a similar format, although I dont mind reentrys. But the thing is, most people either enter late themselfes, or they dont care about it. For instance the 5$ "classic" struggled to reach its 1.000$ target and often saw overlays. And at the same time the 5,5$ big fish with 160 minutes of late registration reached more than 4.000$ most days. So of course 888 Poker keeps the "big fish" but kill off the "classic". Its simply the result of a majority vote by players.

By the way there are other news from 888 Poker, since their "XL Winter Series" kick off today and runs until 20. december. There are basically 3 daily events, and even though they seem to at least partly replace some of the regular tournaments, I might actually play some of these. The "mini" version starts at 7pm CET and has buyins from 5,5$ to 22$, which is within my bankroll :)

Now they just need to remove their casino ads from the table so they don't signal that they just see poker as part of a casino. Poker is a skill game and those ads don't belong there.

Tell me about it! You can play brilliantly in the $5.50 big fish but still blind out because of how long late reg takes to complete.

I no longer bother with the big fish satellites unless i want to use the $5.50 ticket for a series event.

I found that 60 minutes late reg would end then it would quickly whittle down to the money places.

Just wondering if they still have this new series on 888. Does anyone if 888 still has this series?

As written above, all the "classic" tournaments on 888 Poker have been taken down due to a lack of popularity.
