As you know, playing tournaments (especially big ones) has a lot of variance. In regular (non-bounty) tournaments, only 15-16% of players win money.
What do you think about this change so that 18-20% of players win money? This would reduce the variance. I would welcome such a change.

What that does actually change tho?
Instead of 150/1000 players cashout, it becomes 180/1000?

the variance will remain, and then someone will offer to pay 23-25% instead of 18-20% and so on up to 100%

I think it's a good change, but I won't because there have been no changes in poker for a long time and they don't need this, they get their percentage and everyone who wins and how many seats paid will not matter to them:)

Some payout structures are like that already. Personally I dont really care. If you want to reduce variance in a meaningfull way, you need to play SnGs or cash games not MTTs. Getting some more min-cashes might feel good, but it does not change the long term variance much. Typically it also means, that a min-cash become even smaller. And personally I dont care much about making my buyin back 1,7 times after playing for 3 hours.

In some places it is Top 10%. I think it's better to have less number of players paid... prizes are bigger.
