They knew the penalty before they did it - no need to feel sorry for them.
Of course the fact that they knew they might be banned has nothing logically to do with if that was the right thing to do, or if you may or may not empathize with the players who sat out.
AFAIK, and I don't know much admittedly, a lot of those players were basically going to stop grinding CAP HU games anyway on Stars bc with the huge rakeplosion on HU games they wouldn't be beatable by Phil Ivey even.
Now, that doesn't mean PS has to provide them with a game that is beatable......in fact, I wouldn't really be against getting rid of 20BB CAP games and forcing everyone to buy in for at least 40BB in abstract.
PS can do what it wants as a monopoly for the moment; the question is whether they are acting in the best interest of poker in general or even their own best interests as far as the long term.
I would claim they aren't....but we'll have to see what big changes (their own terminology) they have up their sleeves for the next 14 months. The way they revamp the VIP program for 2015 should be telling. If they simply take money away players, that would be a horrible sign. If they move promo money from huge multitablers to beginners/less volume regs to allow the micros the thrive a bit, that would be a good sign.
I won't be holding my breath.
