I thought Australia was totally pro gambling? I read somewhere that Australians on average lose the most money or spend the most time gambling or something out of all nations!

We are pro gambling, and you're right with the rest of your post.

Wow, That must really suck.I'll bet they have casinos.:(

Yes we do.

Yes we are and I don't have the numbers, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was correct.

As I think I've mentioned a few times in this post now, this has mostly come about because online poker is so small here that nobody really thought to legislate for it until now. It could well change in the near future. We haven't banned online poker because we're against gambling - it's wound up banned for the time being basically because nobody remembered not to ban it.

Honestly yeah, that's a pretty big part of it: online poker is so small here (especially compared to sports and race betting, which is huge here) that it doesn't seem to have occurred to anyone to set up a legal framework for online poker.

It's not so much that they're corrupt in this case as it is that they just had other things to do :p

Australian Online Poker Officially Banned Down Under

Bad news for Australians though I guess they have know it was coming. 888 Poker pulled out a while back and PokerStars will mostly likely leave the AU market very soon.

I just don't get it - still angry about what happened in the US 6 years ago.
I think this is stupid ... because every human being is responsible for his actions, so what if the person to play? let him play simple, time is hers, money is also and if the person is feeling good playing, ta beauty now the country want to send in the acts of the human I think this ridiculous

Online poker got banned in slovakia a few months ago, I even wrote a thread about it.
They did not ban poker globally, they just promised to ban new sites every week (lol). they were adding many sites to the blacklist, the first week it was 888 and some other smaller pages which I dont even know. They even banned pokerstars a few weeks ago and they are still offering the services. Most sites ignore it, but 888 doesnt. sadly.

Hello, in Lithuania they banned most sites. We have very few sites to play on. I think that Lithuanians still play on the sites it's not that hard just download the software by a vpn. I personally use the UK as my pokerstars country because I lived there for a short amount of time. The main site that is legal here is betsafe.

Yes the community did - the Senate held hearings and took submissions on the issue earlier in the year. I know both Zorba and I sent in submissions, as did many others. The Joey from the Australian Online Poker Alliance did outstanding work actually getting meetings with the relevant politicians, putting forward our case and organising the response.

Unfortunately the ban went ahead anyway, but there's a chance they'll work on listening to common sense and reversing it in the future.

So how are you playing poker now? Are you hitting up Crowne Casino?

Home games for the most part - I'm a casual poker player at best these days. Have mostly replaced playing poker with sports betting.

What I like about the approach in Australia is that they recognise poker players being an outlier that are unfairly affected by the enforced law. My take is that they've outweighed this against protecting the general populace from unprotected and unregulated gambling. That is in stark contrast to opposition that online poker is facing in the US, which is a good thing. It looks like they haven't completely closed to door for it to come back in a more regulated environment.

I've heard about the ban on online poker in some countries. People in the US and Australia can continue to play, or is it already impossible for them?

Like Zorba said, there are still sites that DGAF about regulations and will let people from all over the world play.

Why does the government not conduct social surveys by making such decisions? I consider this to be more constructive in such matters.
