New York State Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow, submitted a bill to make online poker in New York legal. What is different about this bill? Assemblyman Pretlow states the previous Bill 1380 outlines that poker is not a game of skill. However, Mr. Pretlow has prepared a new bill outlining exactly why poker IS a game of skill. Pretlow has been trying since 2016 to redefine online poker but due to working on legalizing sportsbetting in the state, he now resumes efforts to push for online poker in New York. Despite so many roadblocks, Pretlow should carry some extra optimism this time. Why? The difference this time is that New York now has a thriving online sportsbook industry.

Fingers crossed this bill passes for New Yorkers!

Good news for New Yorkers, I bet that congressman Mr. J. Gary Pretlow, is a poker lover and must have a lot of skill.

Good news! I hope it succeeds! 🤞
Poker belongs to everyone and should not be banned anywhere.

Really cool to see this happening in New York. Taking advantage of the topic, I would like to ask North Americans what are the chances of online poker being open to players from their country globally on major platforms such as pokerstars and ggpoker... is there any state where this discussion exists?

In my opinion (I'm not an American) the chances of all online poker players in the USA joining the international pool for any of the regulated poker sites, is slim to none. April 15, 2011, was the date Americans discovered they were shut out from their favourite poker sites and it has been a very, very slow process to see the return of online poker to a couple of those sites. So, based on what we have witnessed so far, online poker will not be the way it once was at least in my lifetime.

What sort of pressures from the general public can make a ranking official capable of introducing a bill into legislation? I am interested in helping to make it legal in Colorado before i have to move so i can play online legally.

Very sad to read something like this. It's hard to know that the country that hosts the biggest poker event in the world is not part of the online circuit, and has no prospect of doing so again...

If you are not ready to move to the USA, but you want to play with American fans right now, we recommend that you take a closer look at the two largest poker networks: Chico (TigerGaming, BetOnline, Sportsbetting rooms) and WPN (PokerKing). Just as many players gather on the PokerBros mobile App, where dozens of clubs from America are available. At the moment, residents of New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware and Michigan can play against each other at wsop.com. With every year expansion of states is inevitable, online poker in the USA has become even closer to legalization.PokerStars will certainly benefit the most in the near future: the company will be able to combine its storefronts in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and become the largest legal room in the United States. In the long run, this is also good for the development of the entire market: more players means more prize money and increased marketing budgets.

OK I think it obvious where I am from. I hate this article but not in the way most may think. I have read the bill and I like to think its possible. What I hate is for the 1st time in a long time I feel hope. Not as much as I could but I do actually have hope it could happen for the 1st time in many years.

If this were to actually happen it would be nice and actually give me the opportunity to stop dreaming and actually work on them safely from home on a safe site. My goal is not to be a pro but more than I am today. Its hard to want to try and be more as a poker player and not be able to withing your means.

I do wish I had not see this post for the legistation. Hope is a great things but disappointment is a ..................................... .

Probably be a bit sooner if sites like PokerStars didn't lobby against online poker in the United States., especially in states like California.

As for the bill it should be attached to the movie Rounders for the highest probability of success.

It seems difficult to justify legalized online sports betting, but not poker. I'm sure it helps that there's a ton of crossover between lobbyists for both sports betting and online poker, plus they're probably seeing New Jersey's revenue from legalized online poker as a motivator.

S3mpr says 'poker stars lobbies against' online poker in California ? i don't have any idea where that notion comes from ! i'm convinced it's largely the few Native American tribes with established brick + mortar casinos all over the state that are doing their best to control the partial monopoly .

Correct. Which is what had PokerStars against the online poker bill they tried to pass as it had a "bad actors" clause which stated any poker site that continued accepting bets in the US after the UIEGA bill was passed shouldn't be allowed in Cali.

I don't really blame them for this, my comment was more of a joke.

Hope they legalize it for all the New Yorkers, but would love to see a federal solution.
