I started playing poker long before there was an "online" let alone online poker. LOL!! While I have been happy playing online since earlier this year, I still prefer live tournaments and games. I love feeling the cards and the chips in my hand, the sound of the chips rattling as they are tossed into the pot, and the social interaction with other players. :)

I never played in poker offline. Do not like that. Only 1 table and no garantees about fair play.

these days...sure...probably more than learn live.

I am teaching my youngest son how to play...online at stars with freeroll winnings. He likes winning...but i think he likes throwing things at other players more :)

I started playing card games in my teens and learned a lot of different types of games, Cribbage, Don, 3 Card Brag and of course 5 Card draw and Stud Poker, But never even heard of Holdem until it was televised in the late ninety's.
Watching the pros play on TV, I became interested and decided to learn more about the game, I took to the internet and discovered a lot more than I expected. Playing on some sites like Pogo and Facebook for points and soon discovered pokerstars where I played the free-rolls.
It took a while to get into the money but once I did I thought if I can do it on-line why not play for real in one of the local pubs, A close friend had heard of a local game and the buy-in was only £12.00 so decided to give it a go. I never did make the money in those tourney's.
But I did pretty good in the side games, I remember one night getting busted out early holding a full house, beaten by 4 of a kind. and my friend went on to make 4th place and won £20.00.
He asked me how I had done and said I got busted early, and he said Yes but what about the side games? I just replied oh them! yes I am up £120.00 and his face dropped.
Here I am playing in the tourney all night, finished in 4th place for £20 and you take home over a hundred from the side games, he yelled!
That's Poker! was my only answer to him.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

Starting online is much more convenient and you can grow better because of a lot more hands.

I would imagine most people start online, as you are bound to lose money at first. Would you rather lose potentially hundreds of dollars in a single mistake, or under $10?

I would think that online is a much easier venue to play in, than live.

If you want to call a pick up game with you, and your buddies, than live might win.

In a more formal world, brick and mortar locations, are much more difficult to get to than online.

I think that would depend if there was online play for some when they started. Internet is only in the last 20 taken over <3
I guess how you answer is a precursor to your age <3
I was a child when I started with poker. Cards were something that you did to past the time <3
D&D was another way...if that does not show my age :p then maybe my atari will <3

I actually learned to play from a video game. That was way back before there was a such thing as online, let alone online poker. But as far as playing against other people, I would play my cousins or some of the other neighborhood kids. As I got older, I began being invited to games, but I typically did well and didn't get invited back. So when online poker came along, I was excited for the chance to compete against more skilled players.

In todays day and age, I suppose the majority of players take advantage of the availability of the internet and online poker. For instance, when my daughter wanted me to teach her to play poker, I didn't reach for a deck of cards. I fired up my computer and showed her some online tutorials. Then I logged into my account and had her watch as I explained what I was doing and why. Eventually I began letting her play as I watched and answered questions. Finally, we creating her her own account and she was able to win the very first tournament she played in. It happened to be Limit Hold'em, which I have never done good at. So go figure that one.

I did. Anyways I think its kind of natural if a player start playing online Poker before live Poker. Since it's free and you might learn and prepare a lot in case you want to try live Poker afterwards.
