Hi all,

I run a monthly poker tournament, in large part due to all of the advice I received on here, with about 6-10 regulars attending.

We played our first cash game last night with 7 people and it was quite different, but good.

All the player said they liked both formats. I was wondering if it is better to run a STT vs a cash game depending on the amount of player that can make it.

For example if only 6 players could make it would I be better running a tournament?

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.

A 6 or 7 player sng that pays 2 is pretty easy.

You just dont want to fall in the trap of giving to many chips to start, or you could end up with most of your players watching 2 or 3 players playing for a long time.

Another thing you can do is encourage players to make a deal especially in the 1st game.

Playing with 2 decks is another way you can speed the game up- one deck being shuffled while the other deck is being dealt. This works the best with a automatic shuffler.

Why not start with a small SNG tourney with not to many chips and once 3 players are out starting a cash game so as players get knocked out, they can move into the cash game. It worked out well for us when we did this. Within a hour the cash game was going and 2 hours in most were in the cash game.

I agree with Luvepoker. I have played this format at multiple locations and it seems to work very well, especially for couples. When one of them goes out before the other, it gives them something to do. In fact, it gives everyone something to do after they go out of the tournament.

My homegame tried to run a tournament format.

The problem was that if we start the tournament at 7 pm - we just couldn't get the players to arrive on time.

So we stayed with a cash game format - because that can be played headsup until other players arrive.

Good luck !

This is a great idea. Definitely what I would do

When Stones gambling Hall ran their now infamous stream (due to the Postle cheating allegations), they ran some STTs as well. And these allowed late registration for the first X levels, which kind of solve the problem with players showing up late. A possible structure could then be something like:

2-4 players: winner takes all
5-7 players: two places pay (65/35)
8-10 players: three places pay (50/30/20)

In that way the game can begin at a set time, and then time will show, how many people join, and what the final payouts willl be :)
