Hi
I plan on playing Live poker as soon as this pandemic subsides.
What do I look for in a player to try to determine if they're bluffing or playing solid poker. Any HELP appreciated.

little things

Everybody is different. So every time you play your looking for little things. Always look at their faces as they look at the cards. Usually if they have a tick its around then. hands are another that's hard to hide. Excitement can be seen. Just watch as much as you can before you decide its even a tell. Then start small. Just in case your wrong. Nothing is garenteed. Good luck.

If you're only playing $1/2 then you don't have to worry about that. You should focus on hand strength and how your hands goes with the boards.

That read stuff is for the more advanced play. Its like someone showing up with sunglasses at a $1/2 table, that's a number #1 sign you don't know who you're playing against at a low limit table.

You can go online and look for articles on different websites as to how to beat the low $1/2 if you're playing that and they won't mention reads because you won't need it. The truth is you'll pick them up as you play people and gain experience but you really don't need them. You'll know if someone loves playing ace x and a ace hits the board and you hit a set for example and they keep calling you. Its that obvious.

You need to watch people when they are not in a hand.

That is why DNegs likes to talk to people at the table - not only is it social - but you also get to see how people behave when they are not in a hand.

Now compare their tone of voice - body language and betting tendencies when they are in a hand.

Sometimes you can notice people getting very excited when they have AA or similar.

Good luck !

Everyone unconciously makes faces when nor satisfied with something. All one has to do is look for the clues

It’s difficult question as each person can show his emotions quite different than others. First of all, try to watch in their eyes when flop or other card shows. The first reaction will be for a millisecond, people can’t control it, so it’s a good sign for you. Secondly, if players don’t very experienced you can analyse their mimic. And the last one is that you should train your sight as Mike McDonald. It should be heavy and penetrating so they can’t hide their micro emotions.
Good luck

Zach Elwood has some great books on this subject. Probably worth looking there if interested.

New players to live poker should not focus too much on tells of the others, more to focus on their own strategy and minimizing their own tells. Concentrate on what you're doing, as you look at the cards, when the flop comes, how you put your chips in for a bluff or the nuts, speech play, body language for each scenario. Once you feel confidant enough, that you have minimized your own tells, then it's time to try and read others. This will all come with experience, also depends on moods.

However, personally. Eye contact is something I look for, if they are looking at you, without moving away, to me, it means they are relaxed and confidant. Looking away means they are not so confidant.

The "sigh" for me, it shows strength, disguised as being weak. It is very common among low limits.

Quick play/slow play. Takes their time before checking, tends to mean, they have something, medium strength hand. Betting quickly, for me, shows weakness, trying to intimidate. Calling bets quickly, for me, means they are on a draw.

Who is paying attention, or who is on their phone while in a hand, are they interested in the flop? Or are they messaging on their phone? Looking around the room etc, eating food, chatting up the hot chic etc.

Mike Caro wrote books about it. Some stuff is available via pdf now. Older book, some stuff still relevant.

It is a very difficult question since each person can show their emotions in a very different way from the rest. First of all, look into their eyes when the flop or other cards appeared. The first reaction will be one second, people won't be able to control it, so that's a good sign for you. Second, if the players are not very experienced, you can analyze their mime. That is my humble advice.

Each player is unique, so each one acts differently in live poker.
To do a reading, I believe that live this occurs with some certain information that has been taken a few times and found to exist very often. Apart from the accounts that we can see at the game table that are essential for this to work.

It takes a long time to be able to "get a read" on a player. Any one session probably doesn't give you enough hands to accurately "read" someone.
Watch players habits especially when they are in a hand that goes to showdown, and you are not in the hand. Take note of how they played the hand and what their hole cards were.
This can help you when they play a hand you're in.

2 cents..and this is what I do:

Understand yourself and how YOU play:
1. What is your "comfort zone" bankroll-wise?
2. Are you a good liar (you NEED to be!)?
3. Do you understand the mathematics of the game and how to play position?
4. Can you spot collusion, card crimping/marking..etc..?
5. Tournament and cash games are different games so play them accordingly.
6. Always be polite, never put anyone down, tip the dealer and congratulate both good and bad players on a win if appropriate. Fools and pros appreciate acknowledgement.
7. More advanced..never stop observing and pegging EVERYONE..even people on the rail who may be interested in your game. Dissimulate..(wearing sunglasses in a 1/2 game like a previous poster mentioned) and be underestimated. If you're at a table where everyone plays with their chips like magicians, fumble yours once in a while until the jig is up then show them some tricks of your own..your chips communicate via betting and manipulation. And don't forget to wash your hands after handling them because they carry all kinds of germs..from people coughing on them, handling food/drinks then touching their chips...etc.

Good luck and let me know some time in the future if these observations pan out for you. Believe me, if I encounter you at the same table I'll mix things up, shift strategy and do a Gus Hansen on you!

Reading a player is really great if you can do it but the problem is once you have a read you really need to confirm its accurate. While there are players who are really easy to read, they are rare and far in between. To bet a good idea on a play you will need a good amount of time playing with them. If you're in a tournament you may finally get something on the player, and they get moved. I would say this, don't be so concerned about getting a read but always look out for something they are giving away. If you're really worrying about getting a read, you may miss out on other things that could cost you.

I follow his movements, what he does when he is played...I have learned that many players betray themselves through their gestures and facial expressions and thus show weaknesses in many spots.

I like to say that most poker players will tell you what they have.

Whenver I say this out loud people tell me that they don't understand what that means.

And I answer by just remaining silent.:D

If I play with same ones all the time it’s easier to find tells. Usually I will sit for 3-4 hours at the most at the casino table and observe the action for the first hour usually all strangers. Before the first turnover happens I get a good idea of how each player plays Things I look for are who willing to lay down a hand at the River. Those more likely to bluff.
Whose plays tight Those are likely to play premium hands only are predictable on the range of starting hands
Once I establish whose loose and who’s tight I then figure out how their style of play is on latter streets.
I generally adjust my style to tight/loose players. For most of the table who are regular style. Not too loose non tight I prefer just to play position on them and just play regular style. Cannot really outplay a solid player other than to get position on them
