I would say play many rec tourneys before playing a higher buy in, I usually make a good return in playing rec games, I don’t have the bankroll currently to play bigger games, that, and I just don’t really care to lol, I have always looked at this game as playing to make 50/hr playing poker (or try to) sorry just being honest. I don’t have an ego to be “great at poker” If I do, it will be by accident. Just play against people that are not skilled and make money, forget about high buy ins IMO. We all have our own preferences for this game so I am not discrediting what you want to do
But If your talking firsts, then first bring in the cash outs from recs IMO

I would never consider playing anything over a week's salary for my 1st live trny. I mean, if you're just dying to play in a "big" buy-in I wouldn't go over $1K. There's just too many sharks looking for first-timers in big games, especially this time of year.
