Today at a family game for the final hand in the game my uncle had a straight(allegedly) and I had a pair of kings. Both of us didn’t notice and he and my family declared me the winner. He gave me the pot of cash and threw all the cards on the table. I collected the cash and as I was putting chips away he yelled wait I have a straight !! I won the hand we have to keep going. He went all in and I still had a lot of chips. I argued that he already threw all the cards down and gave me the money. Sometimes we miss hands and it sucks but you have to own it. What is the right thing to do in this scenario ? I am sympethic to the fact that if he really truly had the hand that it sucks to be in that position. But I do not like that the cards and chips were all over the table. (So I had no idea of how many chips I had left and he could argue he had more) in addition cards were all over the table who is to say he didn’t move cards to make the straight. It’s all up in the air

I just drove 1200 miles to go to 2 different family Thanksgivings 4 hours apart and now I gotta get up at the crack of dawn and drive 1200 miles back.... I'd say the hand was declared over but is it really worth the hassle... the right thing to do is split the money and call it a draw. You only get so many Thanksgivings with family, enjoy👍

If he tossed his hand in face up then the cards speak and what is said verbally doesn't matter. That said, I think that @MK_ suggested the correct course of action to take.

This is from the Tournament Directors Association rules:
12: Declarations. Cards Speak at Showdown Cards speak to determine the winner. Verbal declarations of hand value are not binding at showdown but deliberately miscalling a hand may be penalized. Dealers should read and announce hand values at showdown. Any player, in the hand or not, should speak up if he or she thinks a mistake is made in reading hands or calculating and awarding the pot

Depends how much hassle you’re going to get from your uncle! Strangers is a different matter but you’ll know your uncle best. If he will shrug it off then leave it and buy him a drunk but if he’s going to hold a grudge just split it!

In my opinion you have to show the hand to be able to win .In your case he could not show the straight so you win.He probably had a straight but he did not show it,I hope he learns to show his hands in the future.I my opinion straights are difficult to see, I have missed more than a few.

In my family game we would all just say “oh man, next time table your cards.” Learn to play the right way in case your friends ever find themselves in a real casino playing.
