The best shuffle ?

So, I was taking with someone about shuffling in general and brought up automatic shuffling and also hand shuffling..and he went on about shuffle techniques, and honestly I never paid attention before, but now I am curious… when does the wash (the cards that look like they are washed) then riffle shuffle happen? Is the ‘wash’ a one time thing?

What are the steps per deal for shuffling vs automatic machine shuffling, thanks?
