Hi Pjokay

I play live a lot and can see you have already been given some solid advice. Live poker means different things to different players and we all had to start out somewhere and find our own style and comfort zone. I am not going to go into reams and reams of detail on my own style but i have included what i think is a useful link for you below.

https://www.pokernews.com/strategy/a-brief-guide-for-players-new-to-live-poker-34217.htm

Also dont be afraid to ask questions to staff before the game, all casinos will have staff trained in providing guidance to first time players and this is a solid way to learn, with each visit you will get more and more acquainted with the process.

I am also happy to answer any other questions on Live Poker if you want to drop me a message.

Good Luck!

May thanks for the link Piratelenn!, have not read it yet but definitely will be!

Good luck in your live event, Arizona as pretty much said it all, the only thing i could had is, don t be intimidated by the other players at your table, watch every players play for the first 2 or 3 rounds, then you will know who you can push around and who you have to be wary of. You are a good player, so you should do very well live.

Good Luck!

That is a great article and if I had known about it I could have saved some typing time with my own advice. :D But I was happy to try to help out a first-time live player so I don't mind at all.

One more thing I wish to add, based on the first tip in that article regarding what clothes to wear... depending upon the season, casinos can often be QUITE cold, for example if you happen to get seated where the air conditioning vent just happens to be blasting directly at you. Some people might enjoy that, but for me, I often head to the casino on a nice hot summer day so I wear shorts... but after an hour at the table I'm shivering. LOL So just be aware that this can happen, and you are probably better off if you bring a sweater or a sweatshirt or a light jacket... of course, you can always just place it on the back of your chair if you don't need it, the worst part would be carrying it around with you or forgetting it on your chair when you encounter a table change or get knocked out of the tournament which is often a bit of a blur. I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten my jacket due to this, and had to run back later to look for it. :) But the main point to realize is - be prepared for colder temperatures than you may expect, especially if the climate is warm, you might not expect the casino to be so chilly as they sometimes can be. Be prepared, because there is nothing worse than shivering at the table, it really makes it difficult if not impossible to sit there concentrating to be able to play your A-game in such a state of mind. Backpacks are usually allowed, just check with the casino about their rules on such things, but that might make it easiest to bring a variety of clothing to accomodate any situation you may encounter. Again, best wishes and very happy to help!!

Hi Alizona and thank you for your reply - i actually think your post was extremely good, detailed and the fact that you took time to compose that as opposed to just pasting a link was extremely valuable. Live poker experiences vary from Casino to Casino and i am sure our very own Debi could offer a really good insight herself as she has played probably more live games than myself, Casinos have become far less strict and more relaxed in the past 25 years, i come from a generation where once, you had to wear a shirt with collar, trousers and shoes to be allowed in!
Protocol changes but each casino will have a dedicated member of team for new sign ups who will talk you through the process on your first visit as a rule of thumb.

Go check in at the tournament desk long before the tourn starts to get your tourn ticket telling you the table number and seat number. Ask the person giving you the ticket how many entrants are in the tourn if you don't know. The seats go counter clock wise 1, 2, 3, etc. A lot of times there is a dealer already sitting at the table before the tourn even starts and no one will be around. If not, there might be a dealer at nearby table all alone.

If there is a dealer there and no one else around or only like 1 other person around then that is a good time to ask any questions you have like what tables will be used for this tourn so you have an idea of how many folks are left in the tourn instead of wondering what place you're in or how many people are left if you can't see where the tourn board is or anything that might bother you. Like where is Tourn board so you know the tourn status and payouts, if there is one.

It might be a good idea to go sometime before the tourn just for the experience if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get there. But if you get to the tourn desk early and registration isn't even open then you can explain your situation to the person at the desk or to one of the casino floor folks calling out names for seating at the cash games and they're more than likely find a dealer to help you out with any questions. Just remember the good casinos have people that are trying to make folks fell comfortable and have fun so don't be afraid to ask them for anything.

Don't worry about it being your first tournament and you don't need to explain that you don't play live tourns to folks DURING PLAY. The people that play tourns will spot you and you don't need to tell the folks that can't see it.

When the dealer gives you a card, its best to cup it and peel it slightly as they come and REMEMBER THE CARD and SUIT as they come. Some dealers will get on you when you wait for action to get to you before looking down at your cards which I think is crazy but they might think you're stalling and start saying to hurry up. They take stalling very seriously and you can't do that live. Biggest difference in live poker. That's something else you can ask the dealer.

Its also a good time to ask that dealer if there are any table quarks like having your cards or chips in a certain place. Google "Casino Poker for Beginners: How to Handle Chips When Betting & Raising. Casino Poker for Beginners: How to Handle Chips When Betting & Raising to understand me on that one.

I mean just go over little silly things during a tourn like if you want to make a raise to $20 but you only have $25 chips where do the chips come from? What does the dealer do, lol. I mean little silly things that you can think of. You'll feel more comfortable knowing what to expect and be more familiar with your surroundings. Its best to ask folks before the tourn rather than during the tourn is my point.

Other thing is when you're out of a hand to get up and stretch. Sitting for hours will do things to you. If you tilt or get upset then its not a bad idea to get up and go get something to drink or go to the bathroom especially early in a tourn or get up and see who the big stacks are at other tables in between hands.

Besides that, just try to enjoy yourself and when you exit don't feel bad. Take it as a learning experience.

Have fun!

A good advice i can give you is see what others do in the table.

When i first started i played outside my turn a lot of times, you need to be carefull with table dynamics.

Hello. I prefer the $1/$2 no limit for experience. Playing online is tougher. You can take your skills to the real table and feel prepared more than if you are playing online. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks to all the CC members for their advice and help. Was a really good long tournament. Came so close to the money too. Had 352 entrants with 290 re-entries. Made it through Day 1 into day two finishing 80th place. Needed 68th. First place was a whopping £115,000!

Did enjoy it. Have to get some more live tourneys under my belt!

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. That's the most important part. And made it to the second day! I bet a lot of folks didn't even make it that far. Congrats.

Thank you, yep first day was quite a slog, a 10 hour session. Our day started with 89 entrants although many re-entered and finished the day with 13 remaining. I was quite pleased to finish the first day in the finalists. :)
