Patience is #1

Naturally and in day to day life I am a very impatient person but I learned very quickly that if I didn't learn patience I was not going to be successful in poker at all. While I may get luck a few times, you can't play every single hand. You might see it working for others by playing dumb cards and winning but you can't do the same. It will only take you so far in this game and will not allow you to progress in the buy-in level you are playing at. You need to wait it out and play the cards they way they should be; keep folding the crap and play the rest but don't chase hands.

Now if only I could adopt this in my everyday life my family would be a lot happier:rolleyes:!

I read in a book once that has stuck with me...

"The wider your opponent’s range, the less scary any particular card can be.
When you’re against an opponent who can have anything, remember that he can literally have anything. That makes it less likely that he has the particular hands you’re worried about."

In low stakes cash (especially live), all the money is made with thin value bets and being willing to bet/fold to aggression.

There are four different ways to play pocket Jacks and they're all wrong.

When I learned the concept of pot odds, I became a MUCH better player. Before that, I didn't understand why people bet certain sizes. I would always bet two or three big blinds on every street, not realizing I was giving my opponent very good odds to draw out against me.

Do not let people limp in. If you let people limp in or if you check to them they have a better chance of sucking out on you.

If you're in tilt, stop playing immediately. Earlier after the defeat, I ran to recoup and lost everything. Do not do like this!

What I learned early

Years ago my father-in-law used to have weekly poker games at his home. I joined in, and one of the first things he told me was, "Whenever Dr. Becker bets, fold." That statement has had far reaching ramifications throughout my poker life. To recognize the Dr. Beckers, and to fold.

The concept of 3bet light, it is very easy to apply in the games i usually play. Also the press/ not limping importance.

I agree with some of the other comments. |Being patient is the only way to progress far into a tournament or even a single game. If you are playing a tournament the make sure you have the time to sit without distractions. If you feel rushed then you make lousy plays.

The one thing I have learned is to occasionally and randomly go all in with nothing just to throw out there how unpredictable I play
It keeps other players scared. LOL
