Learning to play tournament poker involves a combination of studying poker theory, practicing, and gaining experience through playing tournaments. Here are some steps to help you get started:

  1. Understand the Basics: Familiarize yourself with the fundamental rules of poker, hand rankings, and basic poker terminology. Make sure you have a solid understanding of the game before delving into tournament-specific strategies.
  2. Study Tournament Strategy: Tournaments have unique dynamics compared to cash games, with increasing blinds, changing stack sizes, and different payout structures. Read books, watch instructional videos, and study resources specifically focused on tournament poker strategy. Some recommended books include "Harrington on Hold'em" by Dan Harrington and "The Theory of Poker" by David Sklansky.
  3. Analyze Tournament Hand Histories: Reviewing hand histories from past tournaments, either your own or those of professional players, can provide valuable insights. Analyze the decision-making process, bet sizing, and how players adjust their strategies based on stack sizes, positions, and table dynamics.
  4. Play Low-Stakes Tournaments: Start playing low-stakes or freeroll tournaments online or at your local poker room. This allows you to gain practical experience and apply the strategies you've learned. Focus on observing opponents, adapting to different playing styles, and making note of successful tactics.
  5. Bankroll Management: Practice responsible bankroll management to ensure you can withstand the variance inherent in tournament play. Allocate a portion of your poker bankroll specifically for tournaments and avoid playing buy-ins that exceed your comfort level.
  6. Join Poker Forums and Communities: Engage with other tournament poker players by joining online forums and communities. Participate in discussions, share hand histories, and ask questions to learn from experienced players and gain different perspectives.
  7. Review Your Performance: After each tournament, analyze your performance objectively. Review your hands, identify mistakes or areas for improvement, and take notes on what you've learned. This feedback loop is essential for continuous growth as a tournament player.
  8. Continued Learning: Poker is a constantly evolving game, so it's important to stay updated on the latest strategies and trends. Follow poker news, read articles, and keep studying to refine your skills and adapt to the changing landscape.
Remember that learning tournament poker is a journey that takes time and dedication. Patience and perseverance are key as you gain experience and refine your strategies. Continually seek opportunities to improve and learn from your successes and failures along the way.

Well, howdy there, partner! Ya wanna learn poker, huh? Alright, gather 'round and listen up! To wrangle this poker thingamajig, ya gotta know a few tricks. First off, reckon there are different kinds of hands, like havin' the best cards in the bunch or just havin' a little ol' high card. It's like pickin' the ripest berries or gettin' stuck with the runts.

Next, ya gotta learn the rules, like knowin' when to bet, raise, or fold. It's like figurin' out when to hitch your wagon to the horse or just settlin' back and watchin' the sun set. And pay attention to them fancy tells, partner. Watch their faces, their twitchin' eyebrows, or a bead of sweat rollin' down their forehead. It's like spottin' a snake in the grass, lettin' ya know if they're bluffin' or holdin' a mighty hand.

Remember, patience is key, like waitin' for the corn to grow before harvestin' it. Don't go all trigger-happy and bet recklessly. Keep an eye on your chips, too. Protect 'em like guardin' your prized moonshine. And lastly, practice, practice, practice! Start with simple games, like catchin' fireflies in a jar, and work your way up to more challengin' ones.

Now, saddle up and ride into the wild world of poker, partner! With these nuggets of wisdom, you'll be slappin' down cards and hollerin' "yeehaw" in no time. Good luck and may the poker gods be smilin' upon ya!

Play much more aggressively in the later stages of the tournament than you did in the early parts. Don't let your stack drop below 10 big blinds, and when the time is right, just push or fold.
This is probably the most important advise for people who know the rules but little else

the main thing in a tournament is patience If you have patience at the beginning of the tournament, play more actively in the middle of the tournament and become a monster in the later stages and play even more aggressively if you have more chips will help you win more chips if you play tight at a later stage you are likely to lose
