As others have suggested, it's really a personal preference. I'd suggest to try ultra-low stakes of both and see what you enjoy most/are better at.

Keep in mind that while they're both poker, you have different strategies when in a tourny vs a cash game since you're locked into a tournament and no/limited rebuys as opposed to cash games where you can keep rebuying (need to be very careful about tilt; a stop loss policy is important).

Giving the fact ure just start playing poker i suggest tournaments to gain experience. Ofc u can get it from cash games but would be more expensive lol and if u cant get into the money in torneys would be even harder from CG because there usually are skilled players.

As a beginner you are off to a great start finding CC. I would find a good beginners book (topic for another thread) and Study Study Study. I personally would Pick Tournaments or Sit N Goes and then when I felt comfortable with those. Try some cash games. The reason I would chose This path is. I believe Tournaments or SNG's you'll get more poker time for your money while putting your studies to the test. Cash games can consume $$$ fast if you don't quite know what you're doing. So it's best to feel some what comfortable before jumping into the ring. Just my 2cents worth

Tournaments are out of the question , better play cash games than tournaments . It's good to start with theory/strategy , some sngs play money to learn the mechanism only , then real money sngs 9 max , or 45 max are good . Then you can play some limit holdem and later no limit holdem cash tables games imo .

Back in the day tournaments weren't even considered real poker. Cash players made fun of tournament players. Not so much anymore cause of the amount of money involved. Of course with cash you don't know the outcome of your fate. With tournaments one kinda of knows where you're headed and the end.

Isn't Sit & Go like a tournament?

Sit and go is a type of tournament. It starts when the max number of player seats are filled as opposed to a fixed time for Multi-table tournaments. also typically (but not always) is one table as opposed to more than lets say 2 or more tables for multi tables.

To answer the persons question. If I were him/her I would probably try both cash and sit and go as someone else said they are different. Just like it is different from Sit and Go form multi-table tournament cash is different from any tournament. In that in cash games your chips represent cash that you can cash out at any time. You choose the amount you want and no buying amount (asides from table minimum/maximum) for a cash game. As opposed to a fixed buy in and the given the same amount of chips as everyone to start a tournament. In a tournament where chips do not have cash able values. You will only cash out if you win which is typically finishing 1,2 and 3rd place in the tournament in a sit and go with 10 players.
So if you wanted to play a tournament I would advise trying sit and go first before trying multi-table. Less players and it probably will be easier to get paid off. Due to less people to get to the money (payout for finishing 1-3 in sit and go if one table is used).
