I was playing at a starting table last night (live) and, well it was kind of disgusting...to say the least, it was people i dont usually play with but 2 occasion nearly sent me over the top, because i know im right but the donks overruled me and said i was wrong... here are the 2 situations...

1. I was in the pot, and at the end of a showdown (on the river) the other guy raises, so i call, which means he is supposed to turn over his hand, and then i can choose to muck or not, nope, they wanted me to turn over first and i was not allowed to muck! PISSED OFF because i was on a pure bluff and just called at the end for info as to how the noob plays, so i had to show what i did... which was not cool

2. On the board was AA JJ 7

I had K 2
other guy had pocket 10s

i actually won the pot...
with AA JJ K

but he insisted that he is a pro online and that he wins because of the pocket pair, and everyone at the table agreed with him

Needless to say after that i left the table and went to sit with some of my friends that knew how to play...

(useless info: i won the tourny last night :D hehe)

How would you have handled this, other than telling them they are all idiots and should quit poker now while they still have money? which is what i did ofcourse

I mightve stayed at the table if they are all that big of idiots, but with idiots you have to be wary. You never know what kind of crap they are calling with. I assume this was a cash table since you got up and left, so these idiots couldve easily made you a lot of money.

I would've just told them to read the rules, and continued to take their chips.

I'd call time... turn on his computer and get him to show me where he wins. This is too funny although at the time I think I'd be slapping them all. So.... he figures '3-pr.' beats ya, hee hee hee. Does 2pr. beat 3-of-a-kind too? How bout 3-pr. vs. a set? (now that'd be interesting).
If they play that poorly I think I'd have a tough time of it and instead would kick back in my LazyBoy and fire up the laptop, 10secs. later and I'm in a game.
Hey.. what's your buddy's poker site screename (the 'online pro'). I think I would like to add him to my 'friends list'.

So he had 3 pair... that's a powerful hand in Holdem

Was this a home game? If not, surely the dealer/floor manager knows the rules? I'd stop playing the game if the players get to decide that three pair beats top two + best kicker and the dealer doesn't correct them.

If it's a casino or otherwise regulated game, I'm not leaving my seat before they do, too much opportunity. Probably offer to buy drinks to keep them there as long as possible.

Oh, and please do not point out to fish that they're clueless, I certainly do not want them to quit playing poker. Tapping the tank is much worse than claiming that three pair is a good hand.

lol, it was a live tournament, difficult to explain, its a league, and the top 10 of the league play for a big prize...

So, the host does know the rule but is not always strong enough to enforce them, he usually calls me when there is a problem as between me and 2 or 3 of my buddys we are the most experienced and know the rules...

so yeah, i dont think much could have convinced them they are wrong...

Well I would do one of two things.

1. Don't play there (but maybe its a social thing with you and your friends)

2. Print out Roberts rules

http://www.homepokertourney.com/docs/rulebook/roberts-rules-of-poker-version-11-fullsize.pdf

Laminate it!!

Familiarise yourself with some of the more common rules you will be citing.

Keep it in your bag.. next time Mr Pro claims his 4 of the same colour bet your 3 of the same number, pull out the rules and call the floor!!

And don't take his nonsense.

LOL

perhaps it was the OP who was in error.. having accidently entered the first annual twist tournament.

He said he was an online pro.. you just assumed he meant a poker pro.

Haha it kind of sounds like they knew what they were doing and were trying to screw you over.....almost worked.

I try not to tell bad players what they're doing wrong, unless they're friends that ask for advice or if they're blatantly disregarding the actual rules.

Well for #1 especially in home games who really cares? What's wrong with showing down a bad hand when you called? First off maybe they'll assume in the future you'll do it but more likely they're not smart enough to even remember/apply it later. Bottom line as long as you get to see their cards I really don't think it's a big deal if you have to show.

But #2 on the other hand is a huge deal. Tell them that poker is a 5 card game and ask him which 5 cards he is playing. Then pick the top 2 K kicker for your cards and ask him how his 5 card hand beats you. If they don't know the rules I'd just quit though. If you can't convince them that your top 2 better kicker beats 3 pair what's to make you think they won't try to take the pot from you because their deuce is wild? Or they have a red flush? Playing with bad players is good and all but if they don't know the rules and the pot starts going the wrong way I think it's time to find a new game.

As far as I know if you go down to the river and he bets and you call....He is to turn over his cards first...then you....at the point you see who wins......The only other time you would turn over your cards first is if you go all-in and he calls....

Let them have their day. Don't play in games in which the rules aren't decided upon before play.

I had a similar problem in a house game where people said I couldn't reraise preflop because someone went all-in. His all-in was more then double my original bet. Printing the rules now to avoid this in the future :).

I would print the rules if I was going to play them again, but the fact of the matter is that they were prolly just pulling a bully tactic so it won't matter what u say. lol....Good Luck if u go back!

This is totally weird to me. Anyway Id like to play those guys and I sure would not have left without the chips from that hand. They woudl have to kill me LOL
