Tournaments as they are skewed a bit more towards flips in certain spots compared to cash.

I dont know if luck is the right word, but large tourneys are certainly harder to win than a small cash game. Larger field games tend to have more variance than smaller field games like a sng.

Save up all your luck? Lol how you gonna do that?

Winning strategies yes, however in MTTs where you don't know your opponents, it will be hard to know when they are making mistakes... Since you cannot see their cards ;). This is why I believe it's much harder to read the game and fine balance in tournaments... than cashgames, which I really prefer. Especially in cash games luck only counts on a very short term... Like an hour of play, but if you play 8 hours a day on let's say 3 tables, it will just balance out. Roughly said the guy next to you won't have had any more luck or bad luck than you have had playing... A lot depends ofc how you take your opportunities and know when to throw your cards away... Good luck.

Amen to that, but isn't the meaning of luck not the same as variance actually? Lol...

I agree, but for me playing with weaker players "fish", is also some kind of luck, when they are giving you their money ;). And you do need that I think of you want to be profitable... Cuz if all players are on the same (skilled) level then the rake will slowly just eat all of your chips ;). I do think you have control over your stack though even if you play with though players... But it will be less profitable.

just means you don't have skills to win chips from fish.
either pick up profitable table or improve your skills.
:D

sitting with fish all the time, GTD EV and with enough sample not that much, just some 10K hands GTD profit, I simulated throw PC before.

the true thing is you really sitting with fish:D

By my experience, you need more luck in cash games. When you think that you have the best hand, river destroys you. Luck is important in tournament too, but I think that programs sets you up in cash games more.

Cash games in the long term need more skill from a player in order to be a winning player. You may cash less compared to a MTT win but to be in the profit side luck plays a minor role.

In a MTT you must win some critical flips in order to survive and make your precious deep run. One unlucky moment and you are eliminated.

Lol, yes but you can just as well sign up for another tournament then with the money you would rebuy in your cashgame :p

However you have more control over the money you invest for a cashgame, rather than when playing a tournament with it... In tournaments the blinds and antes go up so you don't have all the time to be patient and await good results. It's a different game but I like cashgames a lot more... Too bad all big live events are MTTs... I might make the switch someday, only way to really hit the jackpot I guess :p
Yes and tournaments can take 6-12 hours or more. Cash you can strike quick and get out in an hour.

"Luck" when used in the same sentence with poker always makes me laugh. There is no luck in poker, only math . I promise you, any player who constantly wins isn't relying on luck. It's a good idea to get rid of "luck" from determining whether you win or lose. Just a bad mindset to be in.

The more skill you have the less luck you need.

Ofcourse more luck you need in a tournament , great variance , one great mistake and you're out if the game is in the middle/late stage (so it's late for rebuys ) . But I would add you also need more patience and aggressiveness in a tournament , very easy to go card dead and blinded out .

I believe cash games you need more luck simply because you are putting your bankroll on the line.

Even you though can re buy, you would want to control yourself from loosing too much of your bankroll.

Personally, I think cash games would have a worse result than tournament games when you face bad beats.

In cash game you play more hands than tournament, so usually in cash games you hit something good more often. But, however in tournaments is other strategy and luck factor is more important in late state. So actually cant tell where need more luck.. I guess maybe in tournament.

Luck is needed. This applies more to tournaments. 1 reason - in tournaments more aggressive players who have only one A on their hands and go all-in. 2 cause of the time limitations of the tournament. The blinds go up and it's impossible to wait for a good card. Sometimes with a small stack (10-15BB), you go all-in and then you need luck more than ever ...

In your typical cash game you are almost always deep stacked so the chance of actually going all in is less. In tournaments however your stack can change just by the limit changing therefore forcing you to play more aggressively and playing hands that either need to hold or get better in order for you to stay alive, so tournaments require much more luck than does a cash game. Good luck on the felts!

Tournaments definitely need more luck. Regardless how good you think you are there is going to be a "coin flip" in a cash game when you're wrong you just buy back in. One is expected to take a beat during cash games. It's the whole point
