What is you gut feeling about bet-check-bet?

  • It always smells of bluff!

  • No particular feeling - it depends on the board and run out and opponent

In the olden days if villain bet on the flop, checked the turn, then bet the river most players would view this with suspicion and think villain is most likely bluffing.
In these modern times with GTO poker and lots of solved spots how do you guys regard a bet-check-bet line?
Is you first instinct "..am I getting bluffed:unsure:"?

Just as an example if you defend A5 big-blind vs small-blind to a "normal" raise preflop..
See a flop of 7 5 4, Villain bets flop 1/4 pot (quite small!)
T
turn comes and villain checks
K
river comes and villain bets 1/2 pot

I tell you my experience. Years ago it was very hard for me not to pay on the flop when my cards didn't come out especially but I already reached top pair and the villain bet, it almost always seemed to me that he had more than me.
When I was reading about strategy, one day I found an article by a professional player who said that you should never be afraid to call the 1st postflop bet. He explained that most players more when they are aggressive or supposedly aggressive, always who will win that hand in postflop betting.
When you have a remote chance of making a good game because you flopped a 5 and you have a high kicker on that hand I almost always call.
When Villain checks on the turn, there can be 2 options. Either he has a very good hand, and when he checks he waits for you to make the bet and raise, or postflop he bluffed or semi-bluffed and seeing that you paid his bet he understands that you have something important or at least one project. In this situation, I usually pass, although I'm honest, if I have to make a semi-bluff or bluff, I bet, and the bet is almost always strong.
And on the river it is simple, if your bet is similar to a pot or all in it is dangerous. There you should see how the player acts at your table. If his bet is weak it's almost always a bluff so if you liked your hand he calls, and if you want to bluff do it, surely if your bluff is believable or of good betting strength he will almost certainly fold.
It is my humble opinion referring to what I understood from your explanation of the hand in question.
Cheers:):):)

Thanks for your views, please vote on the poll.. sounds like it is the middle option for you.
BTW I am an online player, only played twice at casino (2 tournaments, 2nd in one 10th in the other - so not a bad record:D), so live reads aren't a thing for me :)
