Maybe you know any good posts about bankroll management and when to step up in limits for tournament games. I was playing some cash games in microlimits, got some profits, but never went out of those. Came back to poker recently and would like to try out in tournaments now.

A really simple system, which can work for most but full time professional players, is the 100 BI rule. Meaning if you have 500$, you play 5$ tournaments or lower, if you have 1.500$, you play 15$ or lower and so on and so forth. With this system you can still play a 2$ tournament with an 800$ bankroll but not a 10$ tournament apart maybe from a very occational "shot". One of the advantages of this system is, it force you to move down during a losing streak, which tend to limit the losses.

There's some rules to follow to better manage your bankroll:

Never buy into a MTT for more than 2% of your bankroll (or the minimum available).

Never buy into a Cash game with more than 5% of your bankroll (or the minimum available).

So here's what buy-in's you should play at various bankrolls:

MTT's

$500-$999 Bankroll = $10 max buy-in.

$250- $499 Bankroll = $5 max buy-in.

etc.

Cash Games:

$500-$999 Bankroll = $0.10/$0.25 ($25 buy-in)

$200 - $499 Bankroll = $0.05/$0.10 ($10 buy-in)

etc.

General tips:

No exceptions. No "shot taking" or anything. No excuses.

Never buy in with money you can't afford to lose.

If you're tilted, take a break if you can or stop playing for the day.

Do not late register/re-buy in a MTT if you'll have less than 30 big blinds. You are relying far too much on luck if you do this. Buying in short hurts your ROI. There will be other tournaments to play.

Remember, you cannot finish every day in profit when playing poker. It's impossible. You win some, you lose some. Hopefully you end up winning long term.

It is quite common to go on 10 buy-in down swings when playing cash games even if you're a winning player. With MTT's the downswings can be even worse, that's why the buy-in restrictions are tighter for MTT's (it's usually only the top 10%-20% of players getting paid after all).

If your bankroll reduces, remember to move down limits when necessary.

Be disciplined & you'll get that long term profit eventually as long as you're playing in games where you have an edge.

If you ever get down to a $50 bankroll again, play the lowest limits available on the site until you've grown your bankroll.

Good luck at the tables!
