First i have posted this question another forum also. Loking for all the advice and suggestions i can get.

first off thanks for looking at the thread. The other thing is my grammar and spelling suck so just warning you.

So little about me. I had 3 kids and was married by 17 I made 3.84 hr frying chicken at Hardee's. So I dropped out of HS and went straight to work to take care of my family. So that's why my spelling grammar and all that **** sucks. It on with so I ended up doing fairly well considering the odds that were stacked against me.

The problem is the work I have done has been very hard on my body and now at the age of 40 I have had a double fusion and looking at another fusion for my c5 c6. So the Doctor tells me I'm done with my job that I have had for 16 years no pension. Again not gonna go into great detail. Just trying to say November 29th is gonna be my last day. I will have a source of income that will cover all living expenses with around 400.00 a month extra. My fiancé is on board with me doing this and she also brings in 7k a month so she isn't worried about it. She understands there will be swings and is behind me 100%

So I have been playing poker since 2000 or so. The problem is after all these years never took the time to learn poker study poker. Won some cash here and there lost 10k or so online but had fun doing it so not a big deal. But now I feel like I have a chance to actually try and make this a way of making some extra cash. So I have started to build a bankroll I will build till I'm at 20k i will be there in September but I'm not planning starting then I'm planning on waiting till after my job is done so I don't have to worry about time.

Now what I'm looking for is advice on how to study. I have been reading books watching you tube reading forums you name it I'm talking like 4-6 hrs a day I'm trying to learn been going through the upswing lab and I just don't feel like I am retaining the amount I should be. It's like it's not clicking with me. The math the hand equity and how do it quickly while playing. So any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My other question is with a 20k roll should I still play 1-2 till I hit 30k to make step to 2-5? I also not sure if I should play some online while I study and learn. Eventually I will play mostly live I just don't like online poker. Not gonna get into i have my opinions and that's just it opinions.

So anyway thanks for reading all that if you did. And any advice is welcome and have good one.

Some do not understand the very essence of the question. You can direct the question briefly?

If you're seeking advice on what to read or study I have done some research for you.

I found that CardsChat actually has a good article on expected value if you want to read it. https://www.cardschat.com/poker-odds-expected-value.php

This article is good on poker psychology. http://www.pokerology.com/lessons/psychology-and-poker/

Again, cardschat has a good article on poker odds. https://www.cardschat.com/odds-for-dummies.php

Must say, well done to the owners of this site for serving the above good content.

Learning needs to be reinforced with practice. Yes, play poker while studying, and try to get into situations where you can practice what you've been studying. Online poker is obviously a much cheaper and more convenient way to practice than live poker, so it makes sense to get most of your study related practice that way. Unless of course whatever you happen to be studying at the moment is specific to live situations.

Thank you for the links. A couple of them I have went over. But they are all good links.

Thanks Matt I have been practicing online. 5NL implementing hand ranges has made a huge difference.

I have also dedicated 2 days out of the week to do nothing poker related. Seems to be helping me with retaining things I learn.

Sounds like your $400 leftover a month to play poker will not be enough to play $1-$2. You will be needing to dip into your fiances finances to make ends meet if you plan on getting your feet wet playing poker. Hopefully, she will not feel it is a big deal when you lose her $10,000. You said it was no big deal when you lost your first $10k. She might feel otherwise if it's her money being lost. An extra $400 a month may be good to play $1-$2 poker 1 day a month, live.

The bottom line is you lost 10K online previously. What makes you think this attempt will be successful.
You need to run a HUD and build up tens of thousands of hands to understand how your opponents play.
1/2 cash the regs will gobble you up.

Starting bankroll will be 20k the 400 a month left over is after all my bills and living expenses. My life roll and bank roll are 2 different things.

As far as the 10k goes I was drunk and having fun. Shove 500 for shits and giggles type stuff. My ol lady is totally on board and behind me. So I'm not worried about that.

I will be playing live not online. Online I play 5NL and strictly for practice as I'm implementing hand ranges for several situations.

What it boils down too is this. If I lose at least I tried. You only live once

I'm not trying sound like a smart ass. It's just my whole life I have been told you can't do that. And so far I have proved a lot of people wrong. So for me I will do what ever it takes to beat the game and if it boils down to I can't and loose the 20k then I will walk away and not look back.

With that being said I know this road isn't gonna be easy and I'm absolutely prepared to take it slow and at least attempt to learn to play with the least amount of mistakes as possible. I figure between the forums YouTube books and practice I can give it a run for its money. But who knows.

Love this and first of all good luck.

If maths isn't your strong side it sounds like playing live, where you can pick up tells, will be more suitable than online where a huge amount of players and playing towards GTO.

Re: improvement, are you a visual person for example? If so you can print off copies of shove/fold charts, equity tables, implied odds tables etc. and just have them beside your computer for quick reference until it becomes 2nd nature.

Reviewing your hand history will also be important, the key is to be honest to yourself about mistakes / leaks you have and what you could do differently.

Good luck and keep us updated!

My advice is if you have a casino close to you, go and play on the lowest table, take no more than 10% of your bankroll in cash. Use only that. and do not play every hand, not even every "good" hand, or even every "massive" hand, just play 1 hand per round on your BB. All other hands watch the other players like an eagle looking for a mouse. Look at tells, look at how the chips go in, with different hands make notes on paper, for each player so you get a profile in your own mind or on paper of each player. Then when you are confident of the tells play against those tells for one person only at a time.

The idea is to learn the players not to play the cards, until you have the player regulars understood. Then play from three positions BB SB and Cutoff. You want the player to the left of you to be the "villan", so you can watch his hands and body movements.

Good Luck.

FIRST advice - play SMALLER stakes until you actually make profit. When you are disciplined enough to be able to make money, then go up the stakes. Not the other way around.

2nd advice - your own mistakes is the best school, other peoples mistakes is a school not so good. So MAKE NOTES. Analyse situations, understand where you went wrong, write that down, remind yourself later. Invent notebook/virtual document. And learn from it/ learn from yourself. Thats what I do.
