Definitely satellites are a very good option for players with a small bankroll. I always try to take part in satellites, especially on weekends, when the number of prizes is much higher.

Exactly like you said, Satellite is the only way to play in big and high-buy-in tournaments, as well as gain experience and expertise by playing with high-level players.

Not sure if you are specifically interested in tournament or cash, live or online, but my biggest buy-in this year for a cash game was $4000 in a 5/10 live game. For a tournament, I bought in for an $1100 live tournament in the MSPT series. Didn't do too well in either unfortunately.
