for many it's a recreation - they enjoy playing and the costs are really minimal compared with other entertainment

It would make sense that most people have a learning curve and were losers at the beginning. I don't know of anyone that was instantly good, but then you do hear the term poker prodigy used...so I guess it is possible.

Poker the family drug, players that lose money can not stop from an ardour and dependence.

Personally I'm up around $1,800 but play purely for enjoyment and as a skill challenge.
Over all I'm behind on horse racing but that for me is recreational gambling with a group of mates over about 45 years.
I do know people addicted to gambling who appear to get a rush from betting which I don't personally understand. These compulsive individuals are the long time losers from whom we all obtain winnings.

Because they are too stupid to realize they are morons. Look around, there are players on this forum who have been playing for 10+ years and they still play horrible. The reason they still play is the same reason they play bad, they are stupid. If you play for years and still play bad you are just stupid.
Look no further than this guy right here!

With that said...I still have fun, though!

Because, deep down, there is that feeling of hope that we all have, a feeling of hope that sometime we will start to win, and the luck will be on our site, but unfortunaly it does not work like that

If the player likes to play I think the results will not be as decisive to the point of taking him out of the game. And even someone who feels the weight of the defeats, surely must have some victories too, these victories should motivate him to keep playing

They just believe that their next call/raise/all-in will bring them a lot of money - shit, not that one - but for sure another one will!..

Peaple have always loved gambling: horse rasing, sports beting, casino. Most importantly do not play Russian roulette--- not recoup ))))

It's probably a combination of factors...
The thrill of the game itself (enough to keep us playing virtual fake-money versions), the knowledge that it's a game of skill more than luck, and the undying belief that one day they will learn enough of said skill to turn their red into black...

Besides, with all the time they've "invested" into learning the game so far, it'd be a waste to just give up right?!
Plus variance... Maybe it was just bad luck with variance this whole time and it'll all come right soon, lol!

I am definetely not a winning player, although I make a few ITMs while playing. I am trying to improve my game and offcourse I hope to hit the jackpot someday and winn a WCOOP evento for 1 million dollars. But that's not why I play poker.. I play poker because I like the game, I like to think about what are my chances of winning a hand, what vilain might have, what can I do to represent a bigger hand or a smaller hand.. I play because I like it, and I try to maintain my bankroll for a while, and when I go broke, once or twice in an year I cash in 10 bucks to play a bit more..

I don't feel an idiot cashing in for another guy who plays better than me (or not) get my 10 cents of that tournament etc.. It's fun and I like it, and that's what it's all about to me..

For instance, I see many players here wanting to join the FRC because of the prize, because of the league etc.. I just want it because on that exclusive games, you'll play against the best in the site and frequently play against one or other player almost gaining a friendship with those ones.. so, that's what it's all about! When you play for the money itself, you will eventually go broke and loose even more money trying to get it back

when we lose we always think that the next day will be better because the next day we played stronger bet in trying to recover what they lost the day before and so substantively lose everything ...

If playing against skilled players from this site is your goal. I'd look into League play, just a suggestion. It doesn't offer much of a chance for prizes and takes months to get to where they're paid out anyway, so most who are attracted to it also want to play against strong opponents. :)
