I would imagine in the old days this would have been very difficult, but with the net allowing lots of tourneys every second of the day, it would be possible.
If you include the 'old days' as the mid-80s 90s, it was quite possible to be a Tourny Only (or vast majority) Professional, especially if you lived in Los Angeles where it was possible to play a full days schedule of Tournaments 7 days a week, as long as you didn't mind the commute to several different casinos through the mess of traffic that is LA
The 'California Circuit' started around this time and included many Professionals traveling around the State for major (and not so major) tournament series in LA, SF, and SD. Then the same group would travel to Las Vegas for the wsop at Binions, LV Orleans Open, and other mandatory outside of CA stops for the more successful Pros (ie major Tunica, MS Tournaments)
