You can only be sponsored if you have a list and an archive full of good and outstanding results.

I think if you are a very good poker player then you just have to play freerolls and you can already build your own bankroll! You could try building up a big enough roll to enter a televised tournament, then ask around your home town for any businesses that might want a little exposure in that demographic. Might help defray a little of the cost of entry but highly unlikely they'll be paying your way into the wsop main event.

As others have contributed, it is unlikely to become sponsored if you haven't shown good results in the past. However, having a sponsor is NOT equivalent to being a professional and there are probably many "bad poker players" who have sponsors.
For example, perhaps a celebrity is playing in some event. They might be sponsored just because of their famous status which has nothing to do with how good (or bad) they are at poker.
I feel like some sponsors know this and use the act of "sponsoring" as an ego boost to the victim player. By the player bragging they are "sponsored" it makes them feel like they "made it" in poker, but this might just be the sponsor taking advantage of their vulnerable confidence level.
Naturally, this isn't for every case (and maybe not that many). I still feel like some sponsors use this as a tool to get better deals with the player than perhaps they deserve. The humble player should realize that sponsorship isn't as huge of a deal as some might believe it is, but this is just my opinion and observation.

Yes, but you have to run around in the right circles. I've never cared much for sponsorship, don't care for the idea of losing OPM. Closest I've come is selling 10% shares in a couple of $100,000 to $1,000,000 online games that I won entries. Overall, those who bought the shares won more than they lost thanks to a first-place win in one $100,000 game, but by selling shares I made money on all the games regardless of outcome.

If you're a great player, then it's probably not a problem for you to build a bankroll from scratch. It is quite surprising that you are a great player and are looking for a sponsor. I think if you are a really great player, sponsors will find you.
