I would start with a tournament so that you can get the feel for the game and get your nerves out of the way without risking too much money. Definitely bring your earbuds. Last time I played live I actually spent most of the time reading stuff on my phone not talking or listening to anyone. As long as you are following the game, you can ignore the people all you want.

A work associate just went to Vegas for the first time. He wanted to play poker (though he does not on a regular basis - just with buddies and not online). I coached him up a bit for a couple hours over a couple of days and his first time playing at a casino (Flamingo) he finished 8th. I'm thinking he is off and running when he gets back.

Best way to over come your anxiety is to just go for it. Throw yourself into some uncomfortable positions and you will realize how silly you were for thinking like that in the first place :)

When i play live i try to minimize any unnecessary verbal contact with pe o ple at the table. I do wear glasses and a hat and sit patiently at the table. This helps me concentrate and keep my mmm ind on the game and no other uncomfortable convos and distractions.

Takes a while to get more comfortable. I used to play live a lot but haven't in about a year. The longer you play the more adrenaline from anxiety goes away.

Playing live could be a lot more difficult than online, just looking at tells from others at the table is a new experience.

Go and check out the casino. Get your players card and ask staff questions you may have, they are usually very friendly and will answer them. Walk around the slots, maybe play a few. Head over to the table games and watch the play at blackjack, roulette, 3-card, etc. Maybe put 25 bucks on RED, you might double up. Walk around some more and learn the layout.... restrooms, food, bar..... AND Poker Room.

Walk in like you own it. Make your way to cashier for chips (cash games) or buy-in for a MTT. I think Cash games are more intimidating at first so I would sign up for a $50 or so MTT and play and get a feel for the room and game.

Just be yourself at the tables and play your game. Watch the play and be ready to act when it is your turn.... there are no blinking lights or beeps telling you so, just other players :) ... When it is your turn guard your cards and see what you have. Act and play like you would normally, stay within yourself.

Your first few orbits will be antsy the first time you play live.... they are for everyone. After you've watched a few orbits and played a few hands, you will start feeling more comfortable and before you know it, you're on your way to becoming a seasoned live player.

Good Luck and have a great time....

My first reallife poker experience was in Las Vegas, at the Binions.
I won this trip and ticket with a free tourney. (http://www.bankrollmob.com/forum.asp?mode=thread&id=32278&start=140)

The people were very friendly, and were not disturbed by my behavior (not making any contact). They were so friendly that I had some paranoia thoughts about it, that they just want my chips in the end. Afterwards I can't deny that I find that thought to be more realisitic than paranoia ;)

I have felt similar...

I noticed that early on in my poker foray I would do well online but never really try real life games. After a while the chance arose for me to do so and I did but before I would get nervous. That was new to me since I never felt that way online. I think it is mainly due to the fact that poker like most things is easier when you are hidden behind your computer. It gives you the power to be anyone or no one all at once and if you do badly no one knows who you are. Long story shorter after about 15 to 20 live real life house games for several hours each time really helped now it doesn't bother me at all. I would suggest trying that before the casino it may be less intimidating. Then go to the casino once you are more comfortable. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

I'm not gonna lie. The 1st time I played live in a casino,I was nervous as a cat sh**ing razor blades.I stood on the rail for 2 hr,saying to myself (do I wanna go in or not go in). I wanted to go in and I made myself go in.I even folded the BB after it had even been checked to me.LOL The dealer looked at me like I was crazy. After I had folded ,I was thinking ,"boy I gotta calm down".Prob the tightest /dumbest game of poker that I had ever played.lol

I would suggest playing the lowest stake of Limit first. At those stakes no one is paying attention to anyone. Plus it will limit your loses from any mistakes you may make.
