Setting goals is an extremely important part of helping us move up the poker food chain, but ...

WE MUST SET THE RIGHT TYPES OF GOALS!!!

Focus on setting goals that are totally in our control.

IE: Playing "x" amount of hands/mth... focusing on adjusting our play when against "x" opponent... recognizing how we're reacting after a bad beat... never saying a negative word in the chat box... playing more aggressively in position... defending more BB from Button steal...

We have total control over all of those specific examples.

Problem Goals: Winning "x" amount of money/session, month, year, etc... winning "x" tournament... outplaying our opponents today...

Athletes, naturally want to WIN their tournaments, games, seasons, etc... business people want to make more money, land bigger deals, sell more "x"... But the greatest athletes and business people understand that it's the process that matters. The process is everything we can control, and is what we should be focused on. The process is every second of preparation, and all decisions we make while competing...

THOSE SHOULD BE YOUR GOALS FOR THE DAY, WEEK, MONTH, OR YEAR!

So, when we're tempted to set goals that include WINNING, we need to back up and reset. Let's focus on our mindset, reactions, decisions, and respect for the game! ;)

Good luck,
Dayne
