I've always wanted to play at a casino. I used to play a home game once a week, cash game 20 dollar buy in, it was a lot of fun. I miss live poker and since I moved away from home my only chance for live poker is probably a casino. I hear it's full of old men who will play any two cards very aggressively. I feel it would be a great idea to go on welfare day.

I live in northern California. And a casino called feather falls. Also there's a card room here in Chico I'd like to check out but have been too nervous too. I know there are regulars there like all card rooms and I'm a struggling college student so my bank roll isn't that much.
Where in nor cal?

As someone too young to go to the majority of casinos in the area, this thread really helped. A nearby casino just opened up a poker room with an 18+ age requirement instead of 21+ but I've been too nervous to play. I've got pretty bad social anxiety so the thought of playing live for the first time has been a stressor.

I've never played live but I know many people that if and tell me there is not much difference in the game is concerned, but the blinds go up slower and the amount of chips you get starting the tournament is much higher than the best online tournaments

25k is not a lot hands at all, so I hope you know what your getting yourself into. Make sure you just take things slow and don't be afraid to ask the floor man questions.

If your playing cash, sometimes you purchase your chips at the table and sometimes at the cage - just ask the people at the desk where you can do that, and ask them if you can jump on a list for "insert your game of choice here" or if there's a seat available.

If something sketchy happens at the table - call the floor man. It is a tool your allowed to utilize.

Make sure you get a players card if its available, and inquire about the bad beat/rakeback/house promotions etc.

When you sit down they'll ask you to post if it's cash - don't post, watch a hand or two and wait until your either a forced bet or can get free hands depending on the rooms policy.

Definitely eat well and make yourself comfortable, try to relax, nerves are really useless in a gambling environment because they affect your decision making process in a bad way.

You just a guy at a table with wagering discs playing a game. By the way, play really tight at first but don't be afraid to adjust to the table dynamic - that's what good players do.

I went to a casino for the first time a few months ago. Like you, I was terribly nervous but the experience was amazing and now I go back a few times a month. Every time I bring a few new friends who tell me they are nervous, my advice to them is just to enjoy it!

Not really anything to be nervous about. Have confidence in your game and your abilities. Pay attention to everything and stay focused. I recommend doing some stretching before you head out to keep yourself loose and I find that it helps me keep my focus.

Seriously. This is great advice. It always grosses me out watching people play and eat at the same time. So nasty!! You're basically ingesting fecal matter.

and not everyone washes their hands after going to the bathroom

So I've been playing online non stop for about 9 months. About 25k hands experience and pretty successful and am going to the casino for the first time tonight to try it live. Really nervous, I know it's a lot different than staring at a computer screen. Any tips anyone could give me for my first time playing live hold em? Thanks!

If your venue has limit, play that, and for the smallest stakes they offer. Not because the games are worth it (they're not) but because it's cheap, and you get to see what it's like, playing with live opponents and a live dealer you can see beyond a screen name and an avi. This will help you get over any nervousness over playing in an unfamiliar setting before you commit the serious money to the game.

Yuck - making others comfortable only helps them, why would you ever want to do that? If you can be most comfortable and make the others nauseated and pissed off then do that!
"Yuck - making others comfortable only helps them"

Yes, it does help them...

...lose more to you. Poker is also about good PR, as much as good play and making good decisions. You don't want to piss off the other players.

Rec-fish come for entertainment, to have fun, and if they get lucky and come away with some extra walkin' around money, that's the cherry on top. Give them what they want: a fun atmosphere that will keep them at the table, not leaving because your lousy attitude makes their play less enjoyable.

Also consider disputes and how floor managers rule. Are they more likely to rule in favour of a congenial player, or an asshole? It's not just human nature to favour a nice guy over some jerk, it's also good business.

My first time at a casino playing live I was so nervous I was shaking. I somehow won a hand and had to do some stretching while sitting type of moves to calm down the tremors in my arms and hands. Then lost a hand and a lot of the nervousness went away. Now if I feel nervous at a table I just play a hand I shouldn't, lose a small amount of chips, and get back in the fight.

Be humble when you get to the table, relax first of all, be very patient, take some hands before entering to play and observe the players, to recognize a little with who is facing and then gradually start their game, the Letters come so be patient first, do not give away silver playing any hand, enjoy the moment do not forget beyond winning or losing silver can have fun and that every situation is a new experience fence learning from it without fear of making mistakes if you Feel safe from your letters do not be frustrated if you lose always I can try again

Be patient and always look for a good hand. Not too risky.
