Protecting the rights of the public, my a**! Protecting the lining of his and probably his special interests pockets is more like it. I find it extremely insulting that he would try to fein interest in protecting the public, when in the same breath, he supports the Kentucky racing industry, casinos, and lotteries (hmmm...I wonder how much any of these groups have contributed in campaign funds? Anyone know?). Is he really naive enough to think that those with gambling problems aren't taking everything they have to the race track or casino. But he doesn't mind them losing all their money there, as long as the government gets a cut. Honestly, it makes me ill. And I don't even live in Kentucky. I think I'll be giving Governor Beshear a call today.

Pantin007, Just thought you would like to know the governor of Kentucky is Ernie Fletcher - Republican If you don't think it matters you need to start checking how republicans vote on these kinds of issues. It's not good if you want to play poker online.

Yep, a 1st term governor, elected 11/6/07, he turned 64 on 9/21/08. Democrat, Baptist and a member of Kentucky Horse Park Foundation.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is trying to eliminate online gambling from the state. A big part of why he got elected was because he campaigned to bring gaming into the state to increase revenues.

Right now he's trying to get control of 140 domain names that have been used in the state, including absolutepoker.com, fulltiltpoker.com, goldenpalace.com, pokerstars.com, pokertime.com, reeferpoker.com, sportsbook.com, ultimaebet.com, and microgaming.com.

I live in KY. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.
I'm *assuming* that this will lead to nothing. Controlling a domain name is a lot different than controlling a site. And I don't think it'll work.
Worst case scenario, the IP's get blocked by the ISP's in KY.
This type of crap need to stop.. dont we elect thes jerks???? arent they supposed to represent the people..When did we become a nation of the government for the government????? When will we as americans finally stand up and kick these old fashioned flip- flopping morons out... guess we have to wait for another generation to die off before we get some rational thinking people in office....you know damn well mr politician here was at the govs mansion last week for the game lol.....

Welcome to the New United States of france. The government is basically controlling the stock market and investment sector now. We're looking at a social health care system in the future most likely. GM and Ford will most likely have to be bailed out and partially owned by the government. So in the matter of 12 months we're basically a socialist republic now.

Also keep in mind that Governors and States pass laws that are illegal and unconstitutional all the time. Something else to keep in mind is that this politician (trust me both parties are crooked, one controls the money the other the media) "just happens" to be a member of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation... what a surprise there that this guy who is most likely lobbied by a gaming commission is looking to eliminate the free market competition. He's doing his mafia bosses proud.

I told my wife the other day that we might move to canada or the UK (we have relatives all over in both countries) ... I wish I was kidding more than I probably actually was!

What I'm curious about is if he ever happened to mention that he intended to do this while he was busy getting votes. Or was his support of gamblling in the state also SUPPORTed by players such as all of us? Seems a little like backstabbing to me?

Missouri has a law prohibiting Online players from collecting any thing they win in online poker, so both me and the husband keep dual residence and pay the taxes to the other state.

Ouch. They have already nabbed GoldenCasino.com - which is probably the #1 online casino that accepts US players :S

ive been gone so long i had to reactivate my account, and the first thing i see is this thread.

as far as icemonkey predicting about the automakers getting bailed out, the government is passing a bill to loan the automakers $25 billion to help pay for producing Hybrid vehicles.

i didnt know missouri didnt allow players to cash out either. this is getting beyond rediculous. next thing we all know we'll be paying an EPA fine for farting outdoors.

Doesnt Washington State have similar Laws? I'm a member of PPA and this is the type of sh*t all members hate. Political money grabbing sons of bitches trying to stay in favor with thier sponsors( Horse Racing and Local casinos). Saying its looking out for public...Bunch of Horsesh*t! I urge all to join PPA..Its $20 and its a very actice PAC for rights of Poker Players( You even get T-Shirt).

The PPA is certainly an excellent approach. I sent an e-letter, provided by PPA, to our state (NV 2d District) U.S. House Representative (Dean Heller) regarding his support of HR6870.

It passed the House Financial Services Committee, 30-19, on 9/16/08 with bi-partisan support. As quoted from his letter: "This bill would require Federal financial regulators to scrap the proposed regulations required by UIGEA, except to the extent they only block sports betting by American gamblers."

Today I received a (form) letter from his office confirming that he voted in favor of HR6870. This is a legislator from NEVADA, a republican. Maybe more support for PPA can and will make a difference.

SMOG! This is just the sort of BS, protect-the-citizens (guffaw, guffaw) type of legislation our over-active Attorney General here in CT is famous for. The closeness of Mohegan Sun & Foxwoods may have something to do with holding him at bay on this front.

Seems such a bogus action for a state governor to be advocating....crime, education, jobs, drugs (still another pointless, mishandled war), health care crisis, homelessness, infrastructure sustainment....this is a clear case of keeping an eye on the wrong ball. Sad.

this whole thing about online gambling in the US comes down to one thing.... money.

Not the money that hard working citizens of the US are spending their money on moral questionable pastimes... but that they are spending their money with organisations that are not US based. The industry generates over US$20bn a year now and close to half comes from the US.

Thats an awful lot of money that can be spent on wars leaving the naions shores.

Understand... this is the ONLY reason why there is issue with online gambling. Like a previous poster said... what about porn? Why not crack down on the legalised gambling? What about drugs, prostitues, alcohol, speeding?

Ahhhh.. these all generate revenues that stay WITHIN the borders...... they should just legalise and be done with it.
