I have always worn sunglasses when playing casino poker, but recently I have noticed there are less and less at the tables. Is this just a western thing or is it happening all over? <indian in shades>

I have always been under the assumption that the shades were so you can check people out without them noticing you eyeballin them trying to pick up tells, but with the style of play and caliber of players out there, it seems meaninless to me to wear shades...it is true that excitement can dialate your pupils, but a baseball cap can shade that enough. I dont know about anyone else but i can't usually pick up on players pupils...my eyes arent that good.

The thing about shades is that they give off this "intimidating" presence. Now, when you really think about it, that can be a bad thing. In live games, if you're wearing sunglasses and sitting really still and focused people know you're very serious. You want to be interactive with the table so people are comfortable around you and start gambling more and making mistakes. Casually talking and being a lively personality important, but not huge, in taking down more money (think Mike Caro). A reduction in the number of people wearing sunglasses could be due to any number of factors; but shades rarely do as good as myth purports anyway.

Some people can't see their cards properly and make mistakes when they wear them.

Hey philthy, this might blow your mind, but they make prescription sunglasses now.

 That's why I prefer using contact lenses... :D
Anyway, I don't use sunglasses when I play TH, because I can't see the cards...

I wear them every once in a while... The best part about me is that I have a mild form of Tourrettes so I'm always twitching my face, you can't tell if I'm excited or nervous! I Love It!

I don't use them. I understand some do like them because it hides their eyes from opponents trying to get a read on them, but honestly, in most cases it's not so much the eyes that give the strength of your hand away as it is body language. I don't think players wearing them look intimidating either - actually I think it makes them look weak because it tells me they don't have enough control at the table to trust their eyes won't give them away.

Sunglasses at the Poker Table

I have listened to several interviews with the real pros. Most of these ladies and genetlemen do not wear them for various reasons. I personally do not wear them at the table but I do believe them if it makes you feel good then do it.:)

You want to be interactive with the table so people are comfortable around you and start gambling more and making mistakes. Casually talking and being a lively personality important, but not huge, in taking down more money (think Mike Caro).

*raises eyebrows*

This may work for a select few players (Daniel Negreanu, for example), but for every player that's good at this there are dozens that are awful at it and it's actually costing them money because the information they're giving away is counteracting the benefit of being "likeable" (assuming they're even achieving that effect - I've known players who've tried it and gotten it so wrong they've had the opposite effect) and then some.

Long story short - unless you're Negreanu or Caro and you're actually good at that act, it's often better just to fade into the background.

As for the OP and sunglasses, you'll probably find it's a fashion thing as much as anything else. Unless you're a name-brand player who's been doing it for years, players tend to associate the Chris Moneymaker baseball cap and sunglasses look with beginners, and a lot of people don't want to be viewed that way.

Do they work? Meh - I don't bother, they've always made me feel kinda silly. But if they make you feel comfortable, go for it.

I'm not so sure it's an act with Daniel. He seems like an exuberant little chatterbox at and away from the table. He's such a bouncy, friendly, little guy...

Could it be that when nobody but his absolute closest associates are around he turns on a dime and becomes cold, cruel, and silent? Anything's possible.

like.... what kind of games? at 1/2 and low stuff like that there no need for wearing them like.....the people arnt studying you or anything lol....

like I said before if the games are 10/20+ live cash or a 10k tourney id use sunglasses because its where you encounter many good pros. They could potentially help.

I always used to wear sunglasses, but now my eyes are getting so bad i can't even see the cards sitting in front of me let alone the community cards. So now i either wear contacts or my prescription glasses.

Maybe if i position my head just right, there will be a glare in my prescription glasses and no one will be able to see my eyes. that way i get the benefit of wearing sunglasses and good vision at the same time...Man i am so smart!!:p:p
