My mother lost over 100k in total...Does she have a problem not really (She just can't control herself at the tables, if she's up or down doesn't make a difference in her eyes)...The quickest and largest amount she lost in one sitting was over 35k in like 2 hours...

As for if I ever felt gambling ruined her life, not really, she worked, she fed us, clothed us and so forth so (not really)...

I have heard of other's who lost homes, and all there money than committed suicide

Sounds like a problem....

Do you know anyone whose life was ruined by gambling? This can be a dangerous addiction. Any older guys here who have seen the damage done by addicted gambling instead of just working a normal steady job?

i just came back from Dubai and Goa and on the way back from the best casino in Goa the taxi driver (who was a poker dealer there for 3 years earlier and now owns his own taxi) told me about one of the richest men in Goa who went bankrupt gambling in the casinos (all casino games, not just poker) basically he sold his bungalow, had to move into an apartment and commited suicide, so yes to answer your question people who dont have discipline can face a dark end.

My dad met Jimmy the Greek, one of the old school gamblers. He won 2 million in one night which back then was like winning 20 million. My dad spoke to him the next morning and all he had was the clothes on his back. Then a few days later he had won it all back again.

It's tough to say whether or not it's worth it, everyone's paradise is different. But after living in a casino for a long span seems like it would eventually start to become more like work just to wake up every morning.

Not gambling as gamling

I have heard many different stories like some people lost their jobs, families to gambling. But, most of them if not all were due real gambling ,like roulette or slot machines ...haven' t heard regarding directly poker ..if that was your concern. And I would say if you are not BINGO player it is not gambling like most people would think. Yes poker might seem to someone who does not really understand the base concept of the game like gambling. The difference between poker and gambling is that in poker you should use at least some basic knowledge of math and strategic thinking. And that is the main issue people do forget and therefore might have "strange" perception the game know as poker.

bankroll management is needed, otherwise "risk of ruin" due to variance is likely to hit, even if the player is good.

The rational part of the brain, which understand EV and Variance, is needed, otherwise the gambling part of the brain is likely to lead one to ruin.

Gambling certainly is not good, but everything should be in moderation.

I had a friend who loved betting on horses at the OTB and racetrack. He was very good at picking which horses would come second but not so good at picking which ones would come first. And he loved playing exactas...didn't like the low risk "place" bets that he probably would have profited on consistently (since he was good at picking #2 horses).

Well, this friend of mine wound up getting too drawn into gambling on horse races and wound up owing a neighborhood bookie around $30,000.....luckily, he had a brother who could "bail him out" but once the $30,000 debt was paid, this friend of mine goes ahead and borrows another $30,000 from the same shady people.

I think that is the definition of a degenerate gambler. Putting your life at risk to play the game....pretty sad actually

One partial solution is to make gambling debts legally uncollectable, so if a casino gives credit to a player and the player blows it all, if the player refuses to pay, he just gets put on a blacklist and never gets credit from a casino again.

a story i heard was a guy who went into the local casino with money gave it to him by the manager to pay the employees, but he decided to play blackjack all the money and yes, he lost,

he looked very quiet and easy like he didnt matter, so after that he left the table apparently without worries to the restroom and once there he cut his veins and was found dead
