I'm with you and building from freerolls, Cause I can't deposit what I can't afford to lose. Its not easy cause there are a lot fewer free rolls nowadays and the fields for them are pretty high which is why I'm here. Can't wait to start playing with you guys and gals.

When I first started playing online, I made a few min deposits that I would eventually lose. Right before BF I finally started figuring out how to apply BRM. Now that I've started playing again, I feel the safest thing to do is build my BR from FRs. It's also a way to prove to myself that I have developed my poker skills enough to move on to the next level. I've withdrawn a small amount this year, and I'm thinking about depositing that money back on to the most trustworthy sites to take advantage of the all of the perks such as deposit bonuses. Bottom line though is that my goal is to not put any more of my own money into online poker.

I started back in the day when you could trade a Amazon card for a P2P transfer on Carbon. From there it's just been freeroll winnings. Haven't been able to play as much lately tho....

I think best option is deposit 100$ and start grind SNG 1$ or MTT up to 1$

that's the idea. be gaining slowly to build a good bankroll playing freerolls and tournaments using VPP tanbien where you can win real money, I'm doing that do not deposit many months because I'm learning to take care of the bankroll playing low and some mtt entries. where I try to get to the bubble. I think your thinking is very good. but is a long way from words to action. luck

If you are just starting out in poker it would be better to play freerolls.
However, if you have already played and you know how to play u could
deposit some money to make your BM bigger.
Better BM better prizes $
Of course u still could play freerolls.

did you build a substantial roll on stars or major sites doing this? I have also heard annette obrestad who is a pretty big winner in poker built her roll up to some serious money from free rolling and she never had to deposit after that so I respect a player like her very much for that and also her live results are just top notch
If i remember right i had built 7.00 into 150.00 before black Friday hit, that was playing a few games here and there, if it was not for black Friday i thin i would of been up to a few K. SnG's and DoNs are the games i played.

Agree!

Some great comments above, that I completely agree with.

I spent a lot of time freerolling in spare time and it was very easy to build up a bankroll at most sites 5-10 years ago (pretty hard now), though lost money at 3 or 4 sites that went bust ($20-$300) -none deposited. Tropical poker had $10 worth of buyins in freerolls every day, so perhaps wasn't surprising!

I would split what I have won (and since spent!) - 50% promos, 25% bonuses, 25% playing winnings (and had a 50% roi on many sites for micro-sngs)

Importance of promotions for the non-pro cannot be overstated and I'll give some examples:

Merge (carbon and poker.c ) when it first became popular regularly offerred instant deposit bonuses- deposit $500 and get 10-20% instantly (plus depositors tourny ticket) - you could withdraw deposit and be left with the $50-100 to play with (in total must've made $2-3k from them mostly because of this!)

Many years ago Bet365 gave me a $109 ticket for depositing $50 (withdrew winnings of $300 and deposit a day later!) and GNUF and a few others used to offer weekly $10k freerolls that would attract 1-2k players

Full Tilt made me the most - a lot in bonuses and I got very lucky stumbling across a 'testing' role for the Academy there which made me $100-500 a month for a year or so (probably also made $50-100 rakeback over the period and another $200 from the tickets bought with points)

Only ever played in spare time, though used to be 3-4 hours a day in evenings (now I only come out rarely around holidays to hunt for decent promos)

It's good to see CC still provide decent freerolls- my advice would be take advantage of them whilst you still can to anyone looking to start playing poker for fun/ in their spare time (any exclusive freerolls with limited entry, eg titan just invited me to a $2k freeroll for writing 20 characters on their facebook page!)- industry has taken a battering, but signs that it is reviving

You can earn more by accessing VIP freerolls (by playing a minimum amount with rb and trying not to lose too much!) on a lot of sites as well which would be the next 'stage' to earn money if you want to be a bit more serious about it (and have the time)

Also still worth keeping an eye out for decent promotions- pokerstars offer some decent tickets with deposits every now and then, 888 have occasional freerolls (played 2 $10k freerolls without any luck yesterday/ today with no requirements), 32red have a freeroll tomorrow night that's worth playing too

Some bonus offers also worth the 'risk' eg FT 'take2' promo if it ever returns- generally you can play $5 rake and get $25 cash, so if you lose $10, you will still be $15 up)

Anyway that's my new year's advice for anyone interested in 'bonus-whoring' - if you want to be a pro, then it's a completely different ball game and I cannot be of much help!

i play freerolls first to taste the client, if i am satisfied i come with deposit, besides i think that you are not allowed to withdraw without depositing funds.
depositing has somef advantages, for example a first time deposit bonus

Many people are scared to deposit, because they are afraid from losing the money. If you are entering to play with the mind that you will loose, you will definitely loose. Think for the poker like it is your business and the deposit is your investment.
The poker is accepted worldwide as a gambling game, but i think it is not, until you made it that way. It is not a card game, but a game against people with cards.
The most precious thing in poker is the patience, which is very hard to maintain playing freerolls.
And finally why to miss all the benefits that every poker room offers for depositing.

I have deposited and have played freerolls. I have started at the bottom before. On Bovada I deposited $20 and was playing limit holdem but then went to plo. I find that if you do start at the bottom you will be more protective on your bankroll as you grind up. But some people do just take shots and it could go badly.

depends your financial situation, if the money don't matter that much, just deposit, but if you are not so good in poker, is better to play freerolls

I would honestly not recommend depositing.....however if your going to I would start out by just putting up $20-$25 that way its a decent amount you can build off of and you can have a bigger sample size of games over the long run.....I haven't deposited since 2008 and that was just a $10 deposit....on a site like Carbon I wouldn't recommend depositing...very shady site....There are many private freerolls on there that you can build a BR off of.

I think it's good to make a small deposit to get some good promotion, and woe to play the micro stakes and also the freerolls. So you increase your chances of increasing your bank, and if you lose do not lose a lot of money.
