I was listening to the ESPN's poker podcast The Poker Edge with Phil Gordon yesterday and the subject of his old show Celebrity Poker Showdown came up. Now, for those of you new to the game, CPS pitted celebrities, Atheletes, TV and movie personalities mostly, against eachother in a single table Sit and Go with proceeds going to the charity of the winning celebities choice. Although I didn't know it at the time, the poker in this show was atrocious but god help me, I loved it. I actually credit this show for getting me into poker. Never missed an episode.
Anyway, in the podcast Phil Gordons cohost Andrew Feldman made a reference to Dennis Rodman as an example of an athlete who had taken up poker. Phil scoffed a bit and then went into a story about a hand played between Dennis Rodman and actress Cheryl Hines which had me literally L'ingOL.
Now because many of these celebrities were new to poker Phil Gordon would often sit down with anyone interested (mostly the ladies it seemed) and give them a crash course in Texas Hold 'em. The instructions he gave to Cheryl Hines were that if anyone checked a paired flop to you, JUST BET and 90% of the time they will fold.
In the hand in question, Dennis Rodman min raised UTG with Q5o, which should give you some idea of his skill level. Cheryl Hines tanked a bit but finally called with KTs, the rest of the table folded. The flop came down QQK giving DR a flopped set and CH top pair. DR, apparently slow playing, checked and Phil Gordon, remembering his tip to Cheryl Hines, commented on how much trouble she might be in, and like the good pupil she was she bet, just as instructed. And just as Phil said would happen, Rodman FOLDED! WTF?
Several months later Phil ran into Rodman and had a chance to ask him what it was he thought Cheryl had that would make him fold set. Rodmans answer? He was afraid she had TWO PAIR! lol
Here's the Video. The hand is 3:52 into the clip.
